you can transfer but some times if the payg is on same network then u need to transfer it out to another and then bring it back to network.

example, u have voda payg sim and want a voda contract, u get say a free t-mobile simcard and ask voda for pac number and tell t-mobile and they will transfer it, then u ask for pac from t-mobile and take it to voda contract.

some times the network can switch it without doing the above

hope it helps

I have an O2 sim I can do that with, but that's a lot of sodding around

I guess its best to just ask Voda and see what they say?

Do you have any facts to back that up or is it a sweeping statment?

I've had an N900 to play for a week. Exchange wouldn't configure properly, until I let it it sync mail last. No portrait mode for most things. Home screen died and had to be fixed by re-flashing (hilden app kept closing). Nokia themselves have openly admitted the N900 is an enthusiast handset. Thats why its so open. You can even flash F/W from different regions without issue, there is a even a terminal client built in and readily accessible. Plus the missing MMS (although no big loss).

Its the 1st device running Maemo and is incomplete. Its not ready for the prime time just yet. If you are willing to spend time tinkering with the N900 then its a rewarding device, there is a lot to love about it. But as with any device running an new OS it needs time to mature. Then again it depends what you want to do with it I guess.

After a lengthly talk to vodas upgrade department i'm still torn between the n900 and the iphone... Also very confused over Voda's market target for the n900.

I'll outline the way i've understood it:

The N900 is available through certain stores and the voda website NOT as an upgrade to existing voda users. So for £35 a month you get 600 mins (+300 free) unlimited txt & internet and the phone for £150. 24 month contract.
or
£40 a month you get 600 mins (+300 free) unlimited txt & internet and the phone free. 24 month contract.

You need a PAC number to use an existing number with this phone, or you have a new number & contract. Therefore existing vodafone customers CANNOT keep their numbers.

When i asked about porting to another network and then coming back (to keep my number) it IS possible, but i'd have to remain on the other network for 1 month.

Vodafone have no plans to change this.

After her trying to sell me a N97 mini (and me being very negative) and then noticing i'd get it for free (been due an upgrade for nearly a year) she soon went off the idea.

I'm now toying with the idea of getting a 32gig iphone for £179 for £35 per month - 600 mins, free net+txts but being a long term nokia user+lover (12+ years) i really had my heart set on the n900 :(

Anyone know any way around this seemingly stupid sales strategy for me? I really don't want to change my number, or go on another network for 1 month. Vodafone is the only network with coverage here.

As a side note: whats the n900 like when not in a 3G area? (no chance of that here, nearest 3G i've found is 16 miles away) :)

Sorry for the long essay!

Good Afternoon Roady,

There shouldn't be any reason to port your number to another network and then back again, I'm waiting for confirmation as to when the N900 will be available to order on an upgrade.

To discuss this further or for help and advice please feel free to email me using out Contact form. Please include MMM135 in the subject bar. Please also include a link to this thread and your username.

All the best,

Maemo is just a distribution, even the 5, indicates there were other 4 versions, of the distribution, all of them use Linux kernel, if anything its pretty common with Debian/Ubuntu as it uses their package manager. Not to mention previous devices that N900 is based on, N770, N800, N810.

What you see on the screen is not OS, its just an X11 xserver. They are all applications and do not make up an OS, kernel does. What defines distributions are package managers, and then half of them use the same ones.

Will people stop saying that it being a new device and Maemo 5 being a "new" OS as excuses for features that have not been implemented or are buggy. Its not even the only device to use the chipset its currently on.

I get *rage* when people call linux distros an OS x_x, so appologies.

Many thanks for everyones input on this forum - especially Kay Vodafone and fillspiz. I'd actually gone ahead and ordered the N900 about an hour before Kay's post, but her reassurance is a good thing!

Just waiting for it to come back into stock...

Hopefully i'll continue to be an ongoing Nokia fan! 12 years and counting! :D

So what do you guys think of the O/S so far then? Read the thread. Any others want to send their's back? I was thinking of getting this.
