Alright, i came up with a lovely build but i wanted to know how far it would overclock, i mean, overclock everything (squeeze everything out of it)

Also if you reckon another piece of hardware would be better, just say (this is a build that i'll hopefully have completed by the end of this year) as im buying the main bulk now

Case: Thermaltake Level 10
Graphics Card: XFX ATI Radeon HD 5970 Black Edition 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card x2 in CrossfireX
Hard Drive: Intel X25-M 160GB SSD + 2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB in RAID 1
Memory: Corsair 12GB (6X2GB) 1600MHz 8-8-8-24 Dominator
Motherboard: EVGA Classified Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
Optical Drive: LG BH08LS20 8x Blu-Ray-RW/DVD±RW Dual Layer SATA Drive
Power Supply: Corsair HX 850W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply
Processor: Intel Core i7 950 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 3.06Ghz OC@ 4.20GHz
Processor Cooler: Corsair H50-1 High-Performance CPU Watercooler
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium - Fatal1ty Champion Series 7.1 Sound Card

The bits that i would'nt like to change (due to price and that its already bought) Is the CPU/Case/Graphics Cards but i still welcome comments/advice etc. as i keep having second thoughts on the build

I think you'd be looking a 3.8ghz cpu clock, ram at 1140 cas6. That's extrapolating from my system and assuming you'll spend less time tweaking it than I have.

12gb of ram is the issue, it makes high cpu clocks very tricky, and makes high ram frequencies almost unheard of. It also means you're very likely to be limited to speeds a 920 D0 can hit, making your 950 a bad purchase.

For that matter the 950 is always a bad idea for air cooling, as it won't clock any higher than the 920 yet it costs twice as much. I'm surprised you didn't read this before buying it. The classified makes very little sense for air cooling as well, it's not going to perform better than a UD5 or P6T if you're air cooling.

Not sure I believe you've bought that case, so regretting bothering to write this reply now. Oh well :(

Alright, since there is a fair amount of hate for the build (and i understand it looks really silly)

and now i feel really bad about buying it......

its pretty extensive but see the link
http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/intel-overclocking/18240-evga-classified-intel-x58.html

Using the EVGA 3 way while overclocking with I7 (i think i remember reading it somewhere in there)
Either way, i understand the limitations on Overclocking imposed by so much RAM, to be honest, the RAM isnt needed, i need to have a bit of guidance as to where you think this build is going (anyone) or where to move it to?

The build itself will work, it's just the waste of cash on certain items and the fact that you want to complete it by the end of the year, indicating that you can't afford to do it all in one go.
The raid 1 setup seems excessive, do you really need 1.5TB data at hand? I have loads of data, but I archive it off to DVDs when I've finished working with it and backup the working set manually to an external HD. That way, a PSU failure can't kill my backup (I've had HDs fail after PSU death).
Would be worth trying to sell your CPU and getting the 920 with cash to spare. Same could be said for the case.
You could halve the memory too, add more later if you really need it. You don't need the sound card yet either.
Do you really need Blu-Ray yet? At the moment I'd suggest just a DVD_RW.
What Jon said too, get a cheaper mobo :)
What's the main uses of the PC going to be?

Aahhh i see, misunderstanding (thats why)
All righty, below is what i've purchased from overclockers and will hopefully be delivered early February
Graphics Card: XFX ATI Radeon HD 5970 Black Edition 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Hard Drive: Intel X25-M 160GB SSD + 2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB in RAID 1
Memory: Corsair Dominator 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel
Motherboard: EVGA Classified Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
Optical Drive: LG BH08LS20 8x Blu-Ray-RW/DVD±RW Dual Layer SATA Drive
Power Supply: Corsair HX 850W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply
Processor: Intel Core i7 950 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 3.06Ghz OC@ 4.20GHz
Processor Cooler: Corsair H50-1 High-Performance CPU Watercooler
Sound Card: in-built

To be honest, its the "Ultima Divinity" with a different Motherboard and Graphics card
The reason i said "end of year" is because i'm not intending to change the build above for "a year" (i have a list of silly expensive peripherals) as such the lack of funds isnt really here, just keeping the build around £3500 was the goal

Mainly it's going to be a gaming PC, for an EveOnliner and an Oblivion/Fallout modding fan
Hence the RAM and graphics card for later game developments (i do plan on running 2 of those cards as the "end of year" build states)

Your post above is something like what i was looking for
the 1.5tb is excessive agreed, having 2 hardrives instead (one for games, another for everything else) would be more agreeable yes? (a few suggestions would be great)
An example would be, i was given the advise to change the SSD for a SATA as the price is cheaper (for SATA) and performance doesnt change that much (apparently)

Also a suggestion for a DVD/RW? as to be honest, Blu-Ray isnt something i plan on buying for a fair while (unless all games shift to Blu-Ray) but i think were a fair while away from that to be fair (if you think that buying a normal DVD/RW would better with the chance of buying a Blu-Ray/RW later a suggestion would be great)

The Motherboard was chosen to be "future proof" (i consider this term a practical joke, but non-the-less) EVGA 3-way is considered to be a great overclocking motherboard, i read a few reviews on the Gigabyte (orginally included with the "Divinity") but apparently it lacked space in certain parts

I can see this computer being a "waste of cash" but, consider it the first most expensive item (ish) that i've ever bought, within my highly exciting life this thing will take up the majority of it for about 10 years (not that it may/maynot last this long) there is a general plan (silly may be) but still, Humour me, gaining the advise seemingly necessary BEFORE the build is sent off would be preferable (as otherwise i'll be going through this again mid-this-year) thank you for your replies so far and please keep them coming

The 950 will not overclock further than the 920 under the H50. As such you've spent £200 on nothing whatsoever.

The evga classified is not going to overclock further than the gigabyte ud5 under this cooling.

So it's not that you're spending a lot more money on a small increase in performance, it's that you're spending a lot more money on no extra performance. Hopefully when it all arrives you'll get the system to 4.4ghz and prove me wrong.

Tell you what, (and again, i really do appreciate a back an forth-would it be possible to contact you on..skype?msn?)
Is this a step in the right direction?
Consider everything below as swapping out the parts:
2x Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB (RAID 0)
Corsair Dominator GT 6GB (3x2GB)
Sony Optiarc DRU-870S 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter

I am adament that the 920 is a good move (although an actual chat with you would help)

Having just installed an 80GB intel SSD, I'd say stick with the SSD :D
Your games should fit nicely on it too. Just add 1 big drive for storage if you need it.
I see you've picked the most expensive SATA DVD_RW on OC!
Expensive memory too. It's been shown that very few bits of software make use of high ram bandwidth, no games do at all (a few % difference at most). Almost any old memory would do (tho I'd still bung in 1600 stuff).

hehe, dang, my "buy" tactic has been found out
Sata drive was due to Jons suggestions, and the money it saves (from the original build) means i can put the RAM up (at least in quality - hopefully - as well as price)
remembering this is a long term idea (so hopefully this kind of RAM will be used)

Also i'm still not sure on the harddrive, you see, ive read reviews, SSD's are gospel, but ive also read that SSD's just arent worth the price compared to improvement from SATA

Hit me up on Skype if you can (need more input, real-time)

I'd build a PC for 1/4 of the price and in playing the games you've mentioned if the case is the same you wouldn't be able to tell the difference !

Such a waste of money tbh... this whole build is a total fail and not right for what you want it to do at all.

The 950 will not overclock further than the 920 under the H50.

Are you sure of this ? As I know Rich from ocuk had dumped i7 920 to go for i7 950 because Rich getting bored with i7 920 chipset. However, if Rich got the i7 950 as I am sure that he know he can overclock it no problem, and pushed more than i7 920. I am sure Rich will explain here shortly of why is i7 950 is better than i7 920 ? Maybe I am wrong or misjudgement.

Ah...but it will do what i want to do, and more
Also an economical build isnt really what i want here

so, with the same mind set (more or less Weird Daves approach) advice please, if you believe the hardware should be swapped out for something else, what would you suggest? why?

Tbh, it will depend on how high its gonna be clocked, at 4ghz, it will cope fine, but then when you start to push higher, H50/high end air will start to struggle. JonJ678 has summed it up in post 7 above.

Very well, indulging here
What sort of cooling are we talking about? "advise" on cooling to facilitate higher overclockings of the i7 950 compared to the i7920

Alright, to update me, myself, so that i can generally speaking get an idea of what this build has been steered towards
Graphics Card: XFX ATI Radeon HD 5970 Black Edition 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Hard Drive: Intel X25-M 160GB SSD + 2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB in RAID 1
Memory: Corsair Dominator GT 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-16000C8 2000MHZ
Motherboard: EVGA Classified Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
Optical Drive: Sony Optiarc DRU-870S 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter
Power Supply: Corsair HX 850W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply
Processor: Intel Core i7 950 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 3.06Ghz OC@ 4.20GHz
Processor Cooler: Corsair H50-1 High-Performance CPU Watercooler
Sound Card: in-built

Later this year (again not a show for lack of funds) i'll see about improving the cooling and overclocking further

I am afraid of one of the Hard-drives getting a bit hot (as the TTLvL10 has only 2 fans for 2 HDD slots) any ideas for substituting the 1.5TB (as i wont need that much space) maybe just swap that for a Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB, means i have best of both, SSD/SATA yes?
