Acer's new Gaming laptop (5850 graphics)

Im a bit nervous, ive not had an acer before, but i guess thats what the distance selling regs are for if its a bit naff or overly hot/noisy :)

Got to love DS I had a 6935 which suffered from a hot palm rest, sent it back and got another and that was the same..... Others haven't had that issue though

Lets us know what you think and how it performs :)

I had an Acer 8935g, the screen was so awful i sent it back.
Couple of things that bugged me you might want to watch out for:
-Excessive screen glare due to the edge to edge glass, I couldnt view it near any direct light, I actually had to move my desk so it was not near a window.
-The wireless touch sensitive button directly to the left of the keyboard, I would often press my hand on it and wonder why my net had dropped.
-Power adapter whine

There were a lot of positives too but the poor screen (lack of brightness/contrast/washed out colours) was a deal breaker for me as you look at it constantly

Thanks for that, im very fussy when it comes to anything like that, and the likes of the hot palm rest above, anything like that and it will be back like a shot, but fingers crossed it does everything well.

Nice! I'm waiting on the new HP Envys to appear, roughly similar but with a 5830 I believe.

me too, looking for an i5 version. I would have picked up the current i7 version but it seems to be plagued with external heat issues. I hate hot running laptops so I hope the i5's lower power will alleviate that

Bad news is that AFAIK Acer chose to put GDDR3 on the GPU not GDDR5, those cards are designed for GDDR5 (which is why they have a 128 bit memory bus) so this has crippled performance. Cant believe they did it really. :(
Itll still game, but much worse than it should!

You will be able to check with GPUZ once you have it.

Yeah, i see that, im going to give it a whirl and if its not any great shakes, ill send it back and get the 15.6" one with the 4650 which is about £500 cheaper.

Well, it runs Left for Dead 2 a treat at native res, just installing a few other games to see how she fares, if it runs Mass Effect 2 well when that arrives, that will be the acid test for me.
