How to sell a £500 blu ray player for £3500...

Christ... I expected it to be the same components from the same manufacturer... but they literally took the whole unit and stuff it inside their own case completely intact? That's unbelievable!

What Lexicon are doing is horrific imo - but I dont see anything wrong with what THX /LF have done in all honesty

Majority of people will use a digitial interconnect with the BD player going to an AV amp and therefore the player will just bitstream the audio signal as is - so bass rolloff etc makes no difference what so ever - I see where the reviewer is going and its a fair point , but firstly Lexicon dont do aps/recievers with HDMI as mentioned in the article and there are aload of people who do....so I would be very surprised if someone chose to buy all the kit from Lexicon

Apparently they've taken the mention of THX off the product page on their website now.

The Ayre DX-5 is even better, over twice as expensive as the Lexicon but at least they bothered to change a couple of bits ;)

I disagree with the validation of THX's actions, if it's certified, then I expect all outputs to adhere to the standard, of course if they had seperate logo's for Audio and Video compliance, I'd be happy, but a single THX mark implies the whole unit.

Ignoring that, holy cow at Lexicon, that'll surely harm their reputation somewhat!

That's pretty embarrassing - perhaps we'll see cheapo Tevion 'THX' certified bluray players in the future. All they need do is pay enough to get the badge! :(

Happens all the the time with all sorts of products, they should have to be tested by a certified lab to confirm all changes claimed or else be removed from sale as a duplicate product ,with no added value by trading standards.

Did lexicon employ an ex nvidia guy to head their marketing/product 'ahem' development departments?

tbf this does happen quite a lot in many industries. Usually theres a 'little' more of an attempt to hide the fact though! Occasionally though the fact that a machine is a clone / identical unit is a plus. My first dvd player, a panny dvd-a350 (still going strong) was rebadged a bush some years later and sold for fraction of the panny - as bush weren't manufacturing their own stuff at the time it was highly likely pana were actually making the things.

I have mixed emotions over this. Sadness, because of what Lexicon has done and relief that we have a site like Audioholics to bring to our attention and hopefully make other companies take note that we won't accept this kind of behaviour.

quite frankly im surprised they thought theyd get away with something like that in this day and age where people arent scared of opening the boxes..

I guess their name LEXI-CON says it all...to put a cheaper BD player into another case and sell it for a ridiculous $3000 more is beyond mere contempt for your customers...i really do feel sorry for the people who have forked out that much when they could have saved themselves $3k but buying the cheaper model.

I'll make sure that i dont buy anything from lexi-CON and make sure none of my friends or family buy their stuff.

Well hopefully this episode will do the trade and press a bit of good by encouraging both sides to be both more transparent about their kit and truthful in their reviews.

Just to put the nail in the coffin, I read today about a planned Oppo/Nuforce, i.e. Oppo BD83 which Nuforce have uprated with improved analogue output stages and PSUs. Interesting that it'll be MASSIVELY cheaper than the LexiCon.

One other point, I also did some reading on the Ayre/Oppo player. Apparently that receives a serious redesign with only the transport and vid stages kept and everything else replaced, thus allowing the use of the good bits from Oppo, but updating areas that Oppo have clearly needed to build down to a price.
