The Single Greatest Exhaust note of all time ?

its not exactly a pretty sound though is it.

Its too lumpy, too rough, almost drag car like to be considered the best noise ever. Brillaint ? yes. Best ? no.

I agree with your points but something about the noise gets me, rough or not.

That's so fast and loud it literally scares me. What's the history of that car?

In very simplistic terms it was a sports car built by Matra/Simca, supported by the French government to win Le Mans, which it did 3 years running from 1972 to 1974. Built to the 3.0L sports car regulations after the FIA outlawed the 917 and 512 it was built with the sole intention of winning the 24 hours but it did go on to compete in other rounds of the World Sports Car Championship into the mid 70's. The engine was also used in F1 by Liger and Matra iteself if I remeber correctly. These were effectively the cars that came before Group C.

A simple summary and lots more to it but effectively French specials!

I still really like merlin's Noisy.wmv video - that Integra with the full Toda exhaust sounded lovely!

Whilst not my favourite of all time, it's the one I can think of (and is that from a member on here!)

This video gives me goose-bumps :D
Spitfires and a Lancaster at Farnborough Airshow, 1996

I was at Farnborough in 1996, my grandparents took me, I remember this, the sound, the smell, the feeling, you could 'feel' the power in the air and the ground, especially from the Lancaster. Although the video is nothing to do with me.

My Grandad has always been a plane nut, he served in the RAF, used to tell me stories about them starting the spitfires up on a cold morning, the smell of fuel and the crackle and pop of the exhausts.

Amazing. That literally was scaring me - especially when you can hear it coming, but can't see it. It feels like the world is ending over the horizon and you're frozen to the spot in terror, brilliant.

And some brilliant mullets in there too.
