Windows Home Server

Not sure on the first question, so I may have the wrong answer below as I'm not sure if your meaning logging into the other PC's from the WHS or from the other PC's onto the WHS.

When I use remote desktop from my Win7 Ultimate machine to log onto the WHS I use the log on name of Administrator, then the account password.

I used to try the username I'd created on the WHS, but couldn't get that to work.

As for copying files, I presume you mean from your other PC's onto the WHS? yup, very simple :-)

If so, when you install the connector software on the other PC's it should have placed a shortcu to 'My Shared Folder' on to the desktop of these PC's? If so open that up and do standard copy(cut) and paste that way.

If you don't have that shortcut, go into explorer and in the menu bar type in \\WHS (where WHS is the name of your WHS). That should then show you five(?) folders Public, Videos, Music, Photos and something else. Again then you can copy and paste. You can also map a drive from each PC if you want to any of these WHS folders (or subfolders).

As for where does it put the data... Ok,

In WHS, it will created two logical drives (C & D) out of the pool of drives that you put in. WHS then manages itself where it puts the data onto which drive. So it will spread out, the interesting part then comes if you switch on Duplicate Data options for any of the folders (which I recommend for stuff that is essential to you). WHS will then make sure there are two copies of this data across two physical hard drives, so you have a form of secure back up. To the best of my knowledge there is no way you can manually manage what goes onto what disk.

Keep posting your questions and I'll do my best to answer them, as well as all the others in this thread.

Cheers mate, that cleared up a couple of things. I can use remote desktop like you no problem. The problem I had was connecting to my server through the browser, I just solved that though by creating a standard account on my main pc so I can go in that way if I need to.

I do have the shares shortcut on my desktop and I used it before you replied to test it out. I copied my photos into the share and then viewed them on the htpc downstairs and it worked ok. I just thought there was more to it than just copying & pasting into the shares folder cos it seemed er logical! I've got loads of data to copy over now this weekend and I'll set up the duplicate option for saving it.

No problems

If you've got a HTPC and are going to be storing DVD's on the WHS, check out mymoves, it's the software I use fro streaming all my dvd's around the house from the WHS and works really well.

I already have all that set up on my htpc so it's just a case of moving everything over to the server. Have to let the Mrs go shopping tomorrow so she can leave me in peace!

Remember to get the MyMovies Addin for WHS and don't just use the the WHS for DVD storage.

TBH I never use Remote Desktop to connect, just logmein.

Thats ok, if you happy to put up with the speed of your internet connection and I use it If I'm away from home to connect to the WHS and all my home PC's but if I'm in the house I find remote desktop much faster and easier to use.

Wll, just when I think it's all going well something happens to bugger it all up!

I was away for the weekend so turned my server off. When I got back yesterday and turned it on nothing happened. Tested the psu and that's fine and looks llike my MB has blown which is a real pain. Luckily I've not moved any data across to the storage pool yet. I'm going to get another board and was looking at this Asus one as the replacement, anyone here using it?

Also, will I have to do a full re-install of WHS or can I get away with a repair? One good thing I suppose, I'll be able to install it with all the knowledge I've gained since the first install so it should be easier this time around!

Iit will probably work if it's the same type e.g. nvdia, or intel as the old one though and to be honest WHS isnt' that concerned about hardware.

But I wouldn't advise it. I would go for a re-install as if things start going worng later, you'll only be wondering if it was a install with WHS problem or something else.

The one good thing with a re-install of WHS is that it doesn't remove all of your shares when you reinstall, it just re-installs the Operating system. Did it myself a couple of months ago.

Slightly new direction...

I've run out of Sata slots on my WHS box. So far I've added one of those cheap Chinese fleabay sata cards (pci) with the extra 3 ports that allows me to add another 3 drives in JBOD. Obviously I'm not thrilled to use a cheap/nasty card in my only backup server so what is everyone else using?

I'll be looking to add a couple more drives soon so need something better. How about a SAS card - how much do the extenders cost - presumably I could have near unlimited drives off a good one? Is there a better/cheaper solution?

I'm using a cheapo 4 port SATA card - Sil 3114 chipset.
No problems whatsoever in 10 months since I built my server.

Thanks for that - is that the SYBA 4port SATA host raid controller card by any chance? Found one at a nice price and was going to get it.

edit: I'm guessing that the software raid function means it does support JBOD?

My cheapo 4 port SATA card is a MRi 4 port SATA150. It doesn't cause any bottlenecks on my HDs or gigabit network.

With regards to remote access to WHS, do you need a static ip address from your isp or will the WHS software keep the homeserver.com website updated, similar to what dyndns.com offers?

those of you with SIL RAID card and the like, what sort of transfer rates do you get over your Gb network ?

Mine averages out at about 40 - 50 mb/sec.

How would I do the following:

1) WHS box in Hibernation with the ability to be woken up via magic Packets over Home Network.

2) Laptop setup to connect to WHS via .homeservers.com domain over the internet when the WHS box is running.

3) Netgear DG834G running DGTeam firmware with WOL etc...

If I was away from home, what would I need to setup so that I could connect to my Netgear DG834G router from my laptop, run the WOL facility to waken up my WHS box and connect to it from my laptop via .homeserver.com?

Thanks...
