So, around August-September time we had a black cat (from the 'name my cat' thread) effectively adopt us.

For a few weeks he started being a visitor in our back-garden, sleeping there day and night, and begging for food. He had no collar, was very skinny, and soon after he began running into the house and that was that. We took him in, took him down the vet, got him chipped, put a collar on him and started treating him for some skin-issue he had. This was a fair few months ago now.

Today however, he came back with a different collar on. There was some confusion naturally and my mum was asking if it was definitely our cat. I said yes because he was behaving in exactly the same way; running into same spots, jumping onto my bed to sleep, and playing the same way he does. He even looked the same, I was certain it was him. There was a number on the collar, so my mother phoned them and explained the situation. The lady on the other end has claimed that it's her cat and that they moved from a few roads away to this road a while back. She's also claimed that he was neutered as a kitten (not sure on this as he has a big ol' pair on him) and he got lost when they moved. Fair enough, it's plausible. She's also said that if he's been neutered, because we said we didn't do it and that if he's been 'done', she's going to keep him. I'm not sure how that's likely though unless she locks him inside as he returns here every time.

Now, here's where the confusion starts to play: what should we do? Her story is plausible, but she also said she noticed the new collar ages ago - why didn't she do anything about it then? We said he's chipped, registered to us and has been receiving treatment - she doesn't give a damn. If she noticed the collar ages ago (remember she claimed he got lost from their new house and the collar was put on when we took him in 'ages' ago) why was he so skinny? He was very thin, so clearly starving - if the time-frame works out, then clearly he just wasn't being looked after. Also, why was she so content to sit on the situation until now even though she's clearly aware that someone else was looking after him by the fact he had a collar? Finally, why didn't she get him chipped?

These issues aside, the cat obviously likes it here (he's sat behind me as we speak) as this is where he returns, eats and sleeps. He's now registered to us via microchip, we've paid for medication (not much, but it's the point) and we've also got used to having him around. This woman clearly hasn't been too bothered about him until now, but is now threatening to effectively take him back, or lock him inside or whatever it is she's planning.

I just can't understand that if this was her cat and she realised he returned (it wouldn't have taken long for him to find their new home if he explores the back gardens) and then sat on her bum for so long as he's obviously being cared for elsewhere.

A part of me is thinking **** this woman and let the poor bugger be a house-cat for a while and that she vetoed her right. We saw no posters or anything. She's just been completely lacklustre if her side of events is true.

I've got a bad feeling if we let him out now, we'll never see him again. So OcuK, thoughts please?

Have you asked the cat how he feels? Who he prefers as his owner? Sit down and talk to him. :)

Seriously, go to the CAB. If he's chipped and registered on your name, the other woman can't do anything. It'll be illegal for her to hold your cat against his will.

I would ask to share him TBH and also ask for some of the money spent on treatment.
If you like him that much and he likes you just get on with the woman. Ask if you could share feeding and such
He will settle where he wants. Where he gets treated better. Lucky cat TBH :D

Just get the RSPCA involved or something and say this nutter of a woman is trying to steal our cat.

You have it chipped in your name so that's enough proof to say it's yours really imo.

I would have ni idea where you would stand legally there matey.
But knowing cats, the minute he got out he would be back over to you, cars basically go where they want and if they dont like you or your house, then theyre off.
The fact that you have got him chipped/registered would, I imagine, definately go in your favour, however my concern would be that this person may do harm to the cat.
When I got my last Tom neutered, he basically didnt have any testicles left and it was pretty obvious, you could always ask the Vet, cos if he hasnt been snipped then its a moot point?

She's being quite clear on her position: she wants to keep him.

As I said, I don't know how she's going to manage that when he's here all the time - she would literally have to lock him inside.

I'm just baffled why she's taken this long to do anything about his collar especially considering he's not been eating/sleeping there.

I think we'll keep him inside and get him up the vet to see if he's actually been done. A part of me think this woman is either making it up, or has got confused with another black Tom.

Neutering without removing the testes is plausible? Really?

If that's true then fine but I always thought that neutering involved physical removal of the testicles.

If so, just point this out to the woman, tell her she's wrong, and that if she cat-naps your fella you'll call the RSPCA / police.

I'm not sure. I did work-experience in a vet's back in the day, and actually watched a fair few of the procedures. I'm sure (hopefully someone who actually knows can correct me if I'm wrong though) that they can just cut/snap the tubes and tie a knot in them. But, from what she's saying, I think he's supposed to have had them completely removed, and as I said: he doesn't seem to be missing his scotch-eggs.

Get the neutering thing sorted first cos the chip makes no difference except that he can be returned if he's lost; it does NOT prove ownership, according to the police (long story about my dog and theft).

I agree. If he's got bits I doubt he's neutered as it's the way most vets would neuter an animal. Certainly the most common way as it's pretty simple and doesn't involve stitches or anything.

If you're scared of her taking him, I'd keep in indoors until this is all sorted. Ask your vet for advice as it could just be a case of mistaken identity.

Hope you get it sorted soon, you obviously care about the cat. Good luck!

Very weird situation.
Presumably she also has the collar that you put on the cat? Which no doubt has your contact information on it also?

Nix get the little bugger a wig she wont want it back then!

She does have our collar, yes. No, the collar did not have a number or details attached. As I said though: he's been chipped and he has a bald-backside due to the skin-condition he had. A quick trip to the vet to check that would've shown up our details via the chip. Failing that, she could've quite easily have begun knocking on doors.

If he's hanging around the back-gardens and has a new collar on, then clearly it's from somebody close-by, right?

Outside the box, I like. :D

I think a bad comb-over would suit him better. That, or a toupee.

Haha or draw a fake moustache on him. Textbook disguise.

Typical cat though, playing people off against each other:p The woman does sound dodgy to me from what you've said though but I reckon if you keep him indoors at your place for a while then once he does get out again, he might not want to return for fear of being banged up again?

I'm no expert but if it came down to it you must be in a pretty good place to claim ownership seeing as you'd have a vet backing you up saying the cat was neglected ect.
