Cat Dispute

You done the right thing Nix, the animal was in bad shape when you took it in, you fed it, took it to a vet, obviously the original owner isnt capable of looking after it properly, consult the rspca, theyll soon understand if an animal has been neglected in any way, and support the case of someone who's prepared to look after it properly. If someone cant look after an animal properly they shouldnt be allowed to keep it.

Its way to easy for people to own a pet, something really needs to be put into place to make sure people are responsible/capable enough to own an animal!

Well, apparently they've got another cat so it's not that I don't think they're capable of looking after him. It's just that, if this is the same cat, they didn't exactly do much to try and get him back. It just seems to scream that they just didn't really bother until now as it was convenient and now that someone else is claiming ownership, they want to have the cake and eat it too.

If my cat turned up after a month or two of being missing with a new collar on, the first thing I'd do is start asking neighbours what's going on, immediately take their collar off and replace it with my own. They have not bothered with this until now after being aware of the cat obviously being cared for elsewhere.

She forfeited her right to the cat when she let it loose in a foreign neighbourhood with no collar, so I am inclined to sanction this under the law of finders keepers.

It's not a foreign neighbourhood though. It's only really a few odd roads away.

Murray are male has been neutered. It look like he still has his nuts but he hasn't it just his scrote, I would think it's the same with all tbh as they have to remove them to stop testosterone production which is one of the reasons they do it. As for the women I would tell her to do one after you find out where she lives ( so you know where to go if he goes missing) I also would keep him in for a whili if you can

Sod here shes obviously just making up a story, ie saying hes neutered when hes not, loosing him, and not making any effort to find him.

I say just keep him but find out where this woman lives, i suppose you can do that by phone number, so if he doesnt come home one day you most likely know where hes holed up and can get him back , that is .. if he is registered to you and she has NO proof that its her cat.

Shes probably some crazy old cat lady whod do anything for a free cat!

I thought OP was going to say the cat wanted half the house.

Disappointed now :(

edit: Feel sorry for you OP, it is an awkward position to be in. Best of luck sorting it out.

OP is very funny, nice read. You think the cat is yours because it came to your house and you started feeding it, yet someone else claims it's theirs and you disbelieve them... Even if it was not their cat originally and it went to their house and they gave it food etc how can you possibly think you have any right to the cat over the other person.

Here's an idea, go get your own cat/kitten instead of pointing at random cats and saying "i'll have that one" them and then you have no problems.

I think carrying on as normal and trying to ignore any collars she puts on it, is the way to go. Cats do play with our affections.

Definitely needs neutering as tomcats will spray stinking pee to mark their territory & also in other cats territory if they can dominate them. They often pee on doorsteps of other cat owners & the smell is very noticeable, does he whiff at all?

i don't put collars on my 2 cats as they can be dangerous for catching on things when cats are doing cat stuff outside :p

same reason we dont do it

one of ours went missing for 2 weeks once and came back with his front leg stuck through the collar :/ getting home on 3 legs must have been pretty unfun for him. others have just ripped them off after so long too. we even once had some woman phone us up to tell us she thought our cat was dead after she found his collar/nametag in her garden :o

why are people still mentioning the neutering when many have came and said that cats still have/look like they have there balls after they've been done

im with skyfall on this one although i admit the OP needs some praise for looking after the cat during whatever happened.

Tbh start feeding it really good / nice food so it will keep coming back , on my nans road some one took a cat in that the owners moved away with about 2-3miles every couple of weeks it would end up where it used to live

I think the cat is ours because it's decided to live here. I don't force it to keep coming back or to sleep, eat and play here. It just does. If it wasn't for us taking it in, the cat would now be dead so let's not try and take any stupid moral high-ground here, shall we? If we didn't take him in, there'd be no cat to dispute would there? Or did you conveniently overlook the fact that the weather was turning, he was starving and the original owner didn't lift a finger to find him?

Where did I say I have any right over the other person if their story is legitimate? I never said I disbelived them either, but there is certainly questions hanging over the situation.

Stop being a tit Skyfall. The whole reason this thread exists is because it's a awkward situation and I wanted opinions.

TBH this woman seems a slightly crazy cat lady, she has no proof, but your good will. And tbh anyone that cats realises that no one holds dominion over a cat, especially a cat that is left to come and go, Me personally I wouldn't worry, as the cat seems to come back to yours, so even if this crazy cat lady succesfully claims it, the cat will come back to yours, and claiming a cat, almost sounds ridiculous, especially a street cat.

Tell her that the vet said the cat was near death due to malnutrition and that you had no choice but to pay to keep it alive, and that if she wants it back then she will have to pay the vet bills.

And then be done for trying to get money under false pretences?
