Of course, Clarkson loves BMWs (which is probably one of the reasons that I'm suspicious of them).
No, Clarkson has an inherent dislike of BMW's and you can tell he isnt happy when he's forced to admit he's just driven one thats good. They are not his cup of tea.
I'm sure they're great. I just don't get why a Passat or an Audi is boring, yet a BMW is the ultimate driving machine. Maybe I never will.
Generally speaking a BMW is designed with the driver in mind - be it the centre console aimed at the driver, the FR drivetrain, weight distrubution, etc etc. The Passat on the other hand isn't a drivers car - this is no criticism, it isnt meant to be. It serves a different market, and as a result of this its compromise as a result. To an enthusiast then, a BMW offers much that a Passat doesnt - infact arguably the only similarlity is that they are cars from Germany.
Quite why we are discussing this is in this thread I've no idea - I honestly think you've picked up the wrong end of the stick and run with it.
The photo is obviously dire, but it's rG-tom's snide little remark 'it blends into the photos like the passat blends into the dull stream of rubbish cars on todays roads' that has me fascinated as to why he believes that his 02 Bimmer is not just another one of those cars, just cause he has a nack with the camera.
I beleive his comment is made more as a professional photography snob rather than a BMW driver, but that aside a BMW 330i is a different car to a Passat Diesel and I find it hard to understand why you think they are the same thing.
One is an economical workhorse the other is a genuine Sport Saloon with considerably more performance, one of the worlds great six cylinder engines, a brilliant chassis and a driver focused setup. One is the choice of the enthusiast (And, tragically, the choice of the badge snob, though these tend to be found in 318i's) and the other is a car aimed at Mr Average, something which is reflected in its economy bias - being of course £10,000 cheaper new and 15mpg better on the combined cycle.
Thing is rg-tom didn't compare the Passat to his BMW. Why would he? They are different. He just said a Passat is dull - which is a valid opinion.
If a Ferrari driver posts that a Fiesta is rubbish is that because it isnt a Ferrari? No. So the same doesnt apply in this case, either.
