I've just finished a series by Robin Hobb and absolutely loved it. Does anyone else have any recommendations for a book in either genre with deep characters, good plot and that is well written e.g. Twilight (WARNING: SARCASM ALERT!!) :D

What Robin Hobb series did you read? Farseer Trilogy I assume?

Read Robin Hobb's other books anyway. All of the books of hers I've read have been amazing so far.

off genre but... try stephen king. If you want fantasy start with the dark tower books but tbh I love pretty much everything he's written.

He says it himself but I don't believe he's slumming it dping what he does but he is a great writer, and I don't hand that accolade out easily.

Ok crush rant over!

Peter F Hamilton - The Nights dawn trilogy (Reality dysfunction, Neutronium Alchemist & Naked God)

Richard Morgan - Altered Carbon & Broken Angels for a start

Alastair Reynolds - Anything from Revelation space timeline

Maybe not so serious, but a very well written series of 7 books - The Saga of the seven suns by Kevin J Anderson - I was recommended these here about a year ago and loved them.

Normally I'd recommend 1984 by George Orwell and Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card on a pretty standard basis but I've just remembered Lanark by Alistair Gray, an absolutely brilliant piece of work. Peculiarly Scottish in ways yet I suspect it would resonate with almost anyone regardless of their background.

Why not try some Jack L chalker? :-

Rings of the master series - Fantastic
The well world series - Again, fantastic reads!

Im currently enjoying reading iain m banks culture novels which have such a vast scope its spinning my noodle!

Just start reading Iain M Banks, the stuff with M as author is sci-fi the stuff with just Iain Banks is not sci-fi. For the most part his sci-fi is better.
The culture series was a favourite of mine, start Consider Phelbas, Use of Weapons, Players of Games, Excession, Look to Winward etc, some I enjoyed more than others, but I did like them all.
As a stand alone book, Against a Dark Background isn't bad.

Ringworld series (4 books) by Larry Niven, great range of characters each with a lot of history (that feature in a lot of his other books). The Ringworld is a giant, ancient habitable ring with the surface area of 3 million earths that orbits a star. The book follows the main character Luis Wu on an expedition to discover where it came from, who made it and if it could be the solution to an oncoming extinction of the protagonist's home galaxy.

Middle Earth books, not just Lord of the Rings - Tolkien :D
The Dark Tower - Stephen King
Foundation Series - Asimov

Neal Ashers Polity books are really good.

Peter F Hamiltons Void book are worth a read as well

Take a look at William Gibsons "Sprawl Trilogy", Neuromancer, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive.

All fantastic.

Also Eon by Greg Bear is very good.

George R R Martin - Fire & Ice series. Utterly brilliant albiet STILL not finished. Also try the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan and pretty much any book by David Gemmell.

Yeah I was looking at the plot summary for Martin's books, they looks pretty gritty and decent. Although the question is- will he actually finish writing this before he dies?? He seems to be taking absolutely years to be coming up with them and I've heard that the most recent is an absolute let down. What do you reckon, will it pick up again?

Don't know how it's been missed but Arthur C Clarkes 2001: A space odyssy and subsequent books should defiantely be required reading.

Oh and if Mr King doesn't take your fancy, first try 'The Jaunt' - one of his shorter short stories, about teleportation. You can see the outcome a mile off but it's all about the journey.
