what is this component?

Hmm, what an odd looking thing!
I have no idea, Is there a code next to it identifying what it is. Oh, and thats a BTX board isn't it. What do you need to know what the component is?

The board I have seen it on is an Intel D945gcz, yes it is a BTX board.

I have several of these I look after and this component on quite a few seems to be opening up where you can see it's in two pieces.

I will have a closer look at the board for a code

What a weird board! Can't think of any reason why the CPU socket should be twisted round like that, especially as the mounting holes are still in the normal place :D

I honestly can't make out what it is, but then again even on my own motherboard there's lots of things which I have no idea what they are.

OK so i'm bored @ work. Not in exactly the same place but it's only a block diagram so it may be the part B in the diagram although it'll be the strangest i've ever seen if it is.

I just googled the frequency number that is next to that thing, and it says it's a Crystal Oscillator?!?

32.768kHZ

Google that.

::edit::

Google Image shows up things that look kinda similar to:

Traces are a more even length to the northbridge?

BTX was all about airflow management. We had some IBM machines with BTX boards at work, but they gave up after about 12 months when no-one else was making them.

^^

I remember when I first properly got into building my own PC's, my friend had the slot A AMD system which was the same idea as that mobo basically.

His chip ran at 700MHz iirc, and he could clock it all the way up to 950MHz!!! :D
