How can you possibly say it has 40k on it with no service history? Seems very suspect to me.

Seen a nice St 170, 03 plate, with 40k on the clock at a local garage. One problem is has no service history at all. He's asking £4k for it, so seems a bargain, but how much of a big deal is it if the car doesnt have said service history?

Said he's got previous M.O.Ts etc.

It's been clocked mate. Service history doesn't just go missing.

If you get the details off the mot you can go to the online mot checker and that will tell you everything about all the previous mots (mileage, fails ect) Could also go into a ford garage, surely they'd have service records of ford main dealer services as they can supply replacement service books.

What do you mean by 'clocked' ?

Mileage has been adjusted to sell the car. The history is like a gaurantee of the mileage a nice folder of reciepts detailing serviceing and repairs with mileage carried out. A lot of dodgy sellers adjust the mileage to lower to fetch more for the car and bin any service history with it....

When i bought my Vectra it had no service book. It has been serviced just the previous owner had genuinely lost it. I contacted the dealers where it was serviced who confirmed what had been done and even posted me a big envelope of copys of invoices service reciepts etc... Might be worth looking into

So what would i need todo get everything verified correctly?

You can verify the mileage recorded on the Mot certificates with the Dvla. A good going over the car can turn up higher mileages than stated, if your not to confident get the AA or similar to do an inspection of the car, will cost a few quid but could save you a lot more. Try and dig out any paperwork that is with the car and call the garage dealer on it ask if they have any other details about the car.
Expect if you do buy it to at least have it fully serviced inc all fluids etc, Budget a couple of hundred quid for this and dont let the dealer service it, Get this discounted of the cost of the car.

Dont set your heart on the one car there are always more for sale, Look for others dont rush into buying it as its cheap.....

Milage recording on MOT is optional, the local place here does not record it, it seems.

but mileage is shown on MOT certificates.

Only after 3 years though. Say it's done 90k in the first 3 years, it'd be easy enough to clock it back to 20k and if the history is "lost" then no ones any the wiser. A few years later you can check the MOT's and it's gone up normally so appears genuine. It may even have history from this period.
