Nokia N900

Hmm, now that is an interesting idea. Seeing as I was with o2 for several years now. Might give them a call...

I'm sure one of the previous pages had a list of recommended apps - i'll look back and try which ones interest me over the weekend/next week.

Am really looking for a IMAP e-mail client that allows multiple accounts - if anyones come across one then give me a holla! :)

Anyone got more Apps or a resource for more than is listed on the ovi store? (which i was really dissapointed with, 'Bounce' is cool to showoff the graphics tho!) :)

Default mail app seems to support it for 810... Though I only got one to test it out with. What client is default for 900?

Also remeber that if you are upgrading they can take off the unlimited text bolt on, so it comes down to 500 txts, and put the unlimited internet one on for free. This is what I have done so have 600mins, 500txts and unlimited internet for £30 pm. Its a 24 mnth contract though...

I think the Vodafone deal from Nokia Retail is better than that O2 one - 300 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited 'net for £30. Suppose it depends if you need the extra 300 mins...

I'm planning to get this tomorrow and i was wondering if it is any good compared to the iPhone 3g?

having the iPhone since release and I'm getting bored of it now :(

u will love the features and multi tasking.

I just installed pc version of quake 3, runs really well, so supprised to see i can play online with pc players.

just need to find a way to put files some where else other then application partition.

the more i play with this the less i like it :(

It deoends what you want from it. I want something that can replace my main box. However lack of decent TV/video-out resoulution coupled with lack of keyboard/mouse... makes it a poor choice. However the distribution is one of the most open out there. Which is what I need.

Perhaps the roumoured 910 might have better hardware support for what I want...

What, you are talking about using the N900 as a main 'computer'!? The N910 will be keyboardless by the way.

You can use a bluetooth keyboard with the N900, I wonder if its possible with a mouse (might eg a hack out there). I suspect Maemo 6 will have v good tv out, allowing for a proper desktop environment.

TV out isnt too bad;) http://www.allaboutmaemo.com/features/item/TV_Out_on_the_Nokia_N900_A_beginners_guide.php

Currently my main pc, is a 1.2ghz via soc and for what I do, browse the net and play with linux, its more then needed. Which is why I can simply do the same on a pda.

And only time I use the physical keyboard on 810 is when using the browser, because for some reason the on screen one, does not work (using matchbox-keyboard as its better then default... outside of browsing ;))

Can bluetooth connect to more then one device at the same time though? When I looked into it, read bits about how 900 is picky about keyboards through bluetooth, and there are pdas/phones/whatever that can output 1080p (not that I have anything that can accept it but that isn't the point) and be usb host, which is what has put me off buying it(900) so far.

But they all seem to run either android, modified (read proprietary and thus closed) android or windows. Neither of them are as open as maemo is, which is what I want. Or they offer minimal upgrades in terms of performance from 810, which I feel is not strong enough to be used a desktop replacement.

What phone can output 1080p - I dont think theres such a thing..

You can use the N900 as a USB host with a programme. :)

Runs android,

# Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
# Tri-band WCDMA
# HSDPA Cat 8 at 7.2Mbps

Currently it is available to phone manufacturers as a concept. The hardware is there though and you can buy a dev kit from them. Just as a first example. But yeah most phones don't have decent video out, but you are forgetting I don't care for the phone part. Though my current phone, some random motorola one, now decided it is constantly charging, even when its in my pocket...

With usb, I read a 50 odd page post on maemo talk which seemed to say that the hardware for host usb is not there? Have you actually tried to plug in a keyboard into it? So far I like 900 the most by its specs and the opennes of the os compared to any rivals currently on the market. But being able to use a full external keyboard and mouse with a display is a requirement for me personally. I am going through the get rid of as many physical objects as possible at the moment, which includes getting rid of pcs in favour of a single one I can carry in my pocket. Don't ask, I am just weird I guess :p.

Yeah but you cant even buy that phone I doubt it will see the light of day, as the next gen devices should be able to do that anyway. You can continue waiting and waiting for the next best thing forever. I have to say that I think the Maemo 6 device coming out a lot later on this year will be better (obviously!) but it wont be out for at least another 6 months.

Theres an app you can use to allow to usb host - look on that forum. I havent tried it no need for my uses and you'd need a microusb to usb plug.

I have had the very same thought as you as using the 'phone' as a desktop computer (for travelling more) but the N900 certainly isnt that - but its the closest phone to it at the moment. Im in no way trying to sell it to you - just wanted to point out a few things.

is anyone else getting pretty poor video play back in the browser? for me video playback is poort quality and not smooth (low fps) and the sound is laggy. any help guys?

If you can use an external flash app, it would be better, for instance there are youtube, ect ownloaders about.

Fine for me. You just need to wait a few seconds for it to buffer so its a bit jittery for those seconds. Then is smooth as.
