how can they pump millions of pounds into aid relief etc for other countries like haiti (which is a good thing), but they cannot afford more shelters for our own homeless people? i could be wrong, but im under the impression this government just wants to look good to other countries first and foremost.

i mean, stray animals get picked up off the streets and are given food, water and shelter, what about the homeless people? im sure organizations like the RSPCA get £0 government money, but where's the help for the jobless/homeless? there are a lot of homeless people out there who are homeless not through choice, but circumstances.

i guess what im trying to say is, if ever you became homeless, the so called government that has no money would rather give aid to other countries, rather then provide more shelters to the people of this country.

i mean before the haiti earthquake the government was reportedly to have lack of funds for the NHS, job centres etc, then the quake happens and over £15 million squid was sent instantly. bunch of liars, where's the help for the people in this country, or do other countries come first so our government look good

Oh dear. Go and read the daily mail some more. To be honest I would rather the earthquake victims had it than the idiot junkies around here.

Partly because international aid is already factored into the budget, and partly because the amounts under discussion barely register on the budgetary scale.

80 tonnes of food or emergency supplies, or a few million quid in direct financial aid, is absolutely bugger all in realistic terms, when compared, for example, to the scroungers, sorry benefit bill of £190bn

Still £15m that could have gone towards our country.
Imagine if the UK was devastated by an earthquake and our society collapsed and we had loads of people trashed, mass looting of the shops quickly running out of supplies and the rest of the world just ignored us. They felt that their own little problems were more important. Thats what its like.

Who's to say that wouldn't happen though? How can you be sure other countries would give a **** about us if it came down to it?

I often wonder about benefits and government grants, at work we receive a grant for a certain service and make 200k out of it in profit, which is just mad, no accounting for money and it makes me very angry.

I also wonder why people who live on benefits dont actually receive a delivery of food and essentials insted of just being provided the money to go buy fags and booze. A delivery of Tesco Value goods once a week should is better then what they do currently, one of the guys I work with is a School Governer and says some kids come to school without even having any breakfast because the parents would rather buy the designer gear and fags and booze then feed the kid 3 times a day.

The current situation is a complete joke.

Well how would it look if the international community donated lots of money and britain sat back and said "nahhh we will keep it for ourselves thanks"

Its a matter of image as well, britain needs to show that it cares for others ;)

What like spending it on quangos instead of putting it to good use helping victims of disasters. I wonder what kind of world we would be living in if there was no international aid for development and disasters.

UK budget 2009: Total Revenue £496 billion (wikipedia)

So 0.00003% (taking the £15m) of our total revenue goes to a third world country suffering a natural disaster worse than anything we could expect given our climate. Boo ******* Hoo.

Why can't people understand that the government spend amazingly massive amounts here and send a few million abroad?

It's called budgeting for different things, not a hard concept

Meh, millions of (already poor) folks crippled by natural disaster, just trying to eat and live?

Or homeless in the Uk, who possibly at least 50% just **** and smoke all the help they do get away?

I'm genuinely sorry for homeless who are there just because of bad luck (quite a few have serious mental issues too), but a large proportion make no effort to help themselves. Besides, even the homeless have access to safe drinking water, and almost most to some sort of food.

Many people in England do care though, it's not an act :s?

Yes i know that but if we simply stood by and watch other countries give aid and we did nothing we would be the country 'who doesn't care' even if a lot of the population do. By giving aid we are showing our support :)

Ahh okay, thought you were saying we only do it for the image!
