Who has NEVER Kerbed an alloy wheel ?

I've only been driving a few months and try and look after my car and it's alloy wheels, I've got a Focus and its alloys dont protrude out too far compared to the tyre wall and so I have managed to not do any major noticeable damage to the wheels thus far ....

However my car is in for repair at the moment and I have a brand new Astra on hire and its got these really smart new alloys which protrude out more than the ones on my car.

Anyway over the last few days me and one other member of my family have been using this hire car on very few occassions and treating it well, as if it were our own.

So low and behold yesterday I noticed that the drivers side front alloy has been chewed into/scratched halfway between the tyre and centre of the wheel and also another mark on the opposite wheel on the other side that is more along the edge of the tyre.

Neither one of us can remember doing this or hearing any scraping but it seems one of us has at some point. :(

So with all that being said how do some people manage to drive cars for years with bulky stick out wheels and never kerb them or so much as mark them ?

I know people are likely to say "just park/drive better" but as I say I'm new and still trying to learn a lot of do's and dont's.

So what tips do you guys have or golden rules do you follow to make sure you never kerb your nice wheels ?

Thanks

I can't help thinking people who have never kerbed a wheel either don't park the car much, park miles away from the kerb every time or don't live in town where they are always squeezing into tight parking spaces along a road. I rarely do it, but when I do it's when parallel parking when it's tight.

But I have a good 4" of whitewall on top of the tread to protect my very very mint very very very rare wire wheels

I need to get all of mine refurbed due to the previous owner. Sadly I don't know anyone around here that does them nor how much it will cost which is the worrying bit.

I've never curbed an alloy despite parking for years every day on-street for Uni.

There is a simple secret - when reverse parking, lower your passenger side mirror down so you can see your rear wheel. Now you can see exactly how close it is to the curb at all times. If your car auto dips you'll probably need to adjust the mirror down a bit further to see just the wheel.

The one time i have kerbed a wheel was about 4 weeks after i refurbed them, a pothole in a with restriction grabbed the wheel and i didn't counter quick enough and hit the kerb, that hurt :(

+1

Never while parking. I did catch a pothole the other day though which put a mark on my left front alloy

My parking space is down the worlds narrowest ever road and is at the stupidest ever angle, it takes shuffling to get in and out.

contact 'the wheel specialist', they have a few places around the country iirc, cost me £160 for a refurb and powdercoating, thats including rebuilding the profile on one of the rim lips due to the precious owner trying to diy with a grinder!!!
Ps. i got a £50 discount because i left it a while after i got the quote and to get me in they gave me a discount:)

I've touched my back left once when forced to the left by someone in a 2-way street with room for 1.5 cars only.

They were not going to stop so it was risk the alloy or the wing mirror. I know what I prefer when it comes to painted, heated mirrors. :/

Other than that, some damage from the previous owner. Refurb this year though.

Thats cheating :p

Nope I've never scraped an alloy, but then again I don't have alloys :D

I've done both sides of the VXR, after having them refurbed in black (after damage from previous owner).

Both times it was carelessness, driving into a parking space too quicking, and just nudging the curb.

In my defence though, the VXR wheels stick out past the level of the tyre closer to the centre.

I've never done it whilst parallel parking though.

I fall into this category tbh, no kerbs here :p

I rarely park it on a street, and when I do I'm worrying about the front lip, so I always reverse park it
