G80 Appreciation thread

The reason is that pc graphics have not been moving on like the old days because most games have to run on the less powerful consoles.

Apart from crysis there's been no major advancements or bar raising lately even bad company 2 runs nice on my 4850 512mb @ 1680-1050.

My fave was the 4200.

Probably the Voodoo 5 for me. (got over two years gaming out of it)

Honourable mentions though go to the 8800gtx and the Radeon 8500, big boost from the Voodoo 5 when all the new gen games at the time ran like a slide show. Also the 4870 512 mb.

i bought my 8800GTx in 2007 on release and its still going strong. Plays all my games to full settings and a high FPS.

Im yet to find a game that card wont play on high well.

Great card, lasted me around 18 months before I felt the upgrade itch, usually it's every 6-12 months.

The Voodoo 5500 was horrible, some nice features but the performance wasnt good, Geforce 2 GTS wiped the floor with it, an overclocked MX wasnt fair off either.

G80's are still quite good today, and they will still play a large number of modern high demanding games with a large amount of eye candy @ 1920x1200. But the only G80 that still performs today is the 8800GTX (and Ultra), as they had the most shaders and the best memory infrastructure. The 320/640 GTS's were quite a bit slower.

I wouldnt say that the G80's were no significant boost over the previous generation, the 8800GTX will blow a 7900GTX out of the water, and try running a current game at 1920x1200 on a 7900GTX, it's miles behind the G80's. Plus G80's brought CUDA to the table, and of course any Physx game will benifit from having CUDA available

+1 I totally agree. For me my 8800GTX was a big step forward from my previous 7900. My friend is still using the card to this day and he can run most things at decent frame rates and quality settings.

Referring to a previous post, its not everyone who goes to the minute details of the exact architectural advances and how significant they may or may not be be, but more so the actual experience to the user themselves.

I still have my Asus 8800GTX, I've put it in my partners rig, and it still runs every single game I have flawlessly.

Cracking cards I must say, it really has served me well!

my 10 year old has my old system ( e6600@3gz ) with my 8800gts 640 ( lucky 10 year old ) and it plays everything great @1650x1080 . please correct me but im sure g80 was relaesed 2006 . im sure ive had it over 3 years .

Exactly, as soon as I saw drunken talking fondly of the 2900XT I nearly choked on me cornflakes.

G80 (in its GTX/Ultra form) truly is an iconic GPU that has stood the test of time.

I think the 8800 can join the 4200 and 9700 as being the best cards ever, it's a little early yet but maybe this 5870 i've got will join them, only time will tell

Anyone who bought an 8800GTX its in its early days has really got their money worth... they will still put up playable fps in most of the latest titles with max details at 1920x and in some cases still give a good 60+fps... 3+ years on - compared to the GeForce 3 - which was another great card - but 3 years on it was struggling at 9-10fps in the latest titles.

Unlike the 2900 which was based on some idyllic dream of the future, the G80 core was based purely on what was relevant for the market and the immediate future. If ATI's vision of a DX10 future had come to pass they'd have had a rude awakening as the card could not in any shape or form live upto the performance required to actually use those features in anything other than token effects.

DX10 benchmarks from that card shouldn't be considered too valid anyhow as many features were missing or not working properly in either hardware or drivers - many times it was getting a significant performance boost due to the fact it wasn't actually rendering an effect properly. Off the top of my head I think some hardware features are still broken and strapped in the drivers.

For me tho the 8800GT is the card I think fonder of - it was often 1-2fps behind the 8800GTX, overclocked well and sold at a great price point... only the lack of VRAM really crippled it.

It is incredibly ignorant - granted the x1950xtx could give the G80 cards a good run in older shader based stuff that came out around the time of the cards - but throw any recent DX9 title at it and the 8800GTX still stands the test of time and is probably a minimum 2.5-3x faster. Tech wise its a significant boost over the previous generation even if the performance story isn't entirely straight forward.


Infact in crysis the 8800GTX is over 5 times faster in high quality settings - that is how much of a boost it is.

I got mine at the end of 2007, I had some issues with it when I first got it though, as the PSU I had in my crappy dual core Athlon rig wasn't up to the job so everytime I tried to run a game my system would shutdown after about 10 seconds..

I've actually just found a couple of old pics in my photobucket account of what I ended up doing until I could get a temporary PSU, it is well shady!!!

Basically I had my old s754 rig sat next to the 939 rig with the 8800GTX in it, then ran the molex cables from the 754 rig into the 8800GTX!!

Thinking back it would have been a whole lot easier to just remove the PSU, but I couldn't be bothered, it was only like this for a couple of days until I could get a new PSU that was up to the job..

But yeah, I'm still pretty fond of this card, 3 years on and it's still running anything I chuck at it, albeit on a 19" LCD at 1440x900, I've been using it constantly for the last 3 weeks as my own system is in bits, and tbh, I haven't really noticed much difference between this and my 280...

I don't understand what drunkenmaster is talking about though, no realy significant boost over the previous gen?!?!

Biggest load of tripe I've read on this forum in years, the G80 gave a massive boost in terms of performance and hardly any other GPU compares in terms of longevity.

you beat me to it.. utter twaddle.. I went from a 7950GX2 and it hammered it and the only really I changed to my current GTX280 was boredom, noticed no real performance increase although I'm no mega gamer.
