Paranormal Activity

Was brilliant, very much cacked my pants.

I watched it right though, by myself, in bed at 1am. I think any other way would ruined it. If i'd of had a mate or gf round I probably would have thought it wasn't great either.

Doesnt make sense to the bigwigs. Nobody would like it if it doesnt have a least a million spent on and isnt replete with all the hollywood cliches.

Seriously its ok, the only slightly unnerving part of the film is the ending. Its not as jumpy as I thought it was going to be, dont want to spoil it for those that havent seen. Id give it 8/10.

I started a thread about a month ago on this garbage.

If you can watch it for free then do so but never pay for a two minute ending.

This is the biggest load of hyped up carp that i have seen for a few years.

For the second time..............do not rent this piece of crap.

Went to go and see this and was pretty impressed, mostly by the reaction of the croud around me in the cinemas. Made the experiance abit more enjoyable.

I just found it to be more un-nerving than anything else, I wouldnt say 'scarey'. The only section that made me jump are the cheap tricks dotted around (someone in your face or flying at the screen with a loud BANG sound).

Overall it was a very enjoyable experiance given that your in a fullish cinema. I cant imagine feeling the same way if I watched it on DVD sat on my sofa for example.

Id give it a good 7/10. Deffo worth seeing in the cinema for abit of a change or if your going on a date with a jumpy female friend ;)

I thought it was pretty good. A couple of moment where the whole cinema screamed, which was pretty cool :)

I also like that during the night scenes the whole cinema went dead silent, almost like everyone was holding their breath.

I didn't like the ending much, the original ending sounded better.

Amazing Film, its shame about the awful ending. could have been better. The profits they have made tho!woahh. massive Profits, they must be laughing!:)

Took ages to get into, but not that scary as expected.

same as I felt. I thought the films build up didnt really go anywhere because of the stupid ending. It all could have been much more believable if it hadnt have been for the very end and all those roaring sounds - perhaps another....more freaky sound would have been better.

same :D Althought it was blatent what was going to happen at the end, I still quite liked it :)

Be nice to see the other 2 endings though.

I just saw the original ending and have to say it made the film a far better experience. I really did not like the Spielberg ending at all, and still thought the film built up a little bit too slowly in most places

Exactly the same for me.

I saw this early this morning, at about 1am, in bed, lights out, nobody else in the house.

It was one of the scariest films Ive seen in recent times. Horror films that rely on gore, simply don't cut it for me. They are gruesome and gory, but not scary.

Films like Paranormal Activity, rely on drawing the viewer in and making the viewer care for the characters (something which PA did extraordinarily well). The director/writers, drew the audience very gradually and while watching the movie, I was thinking that everytime they switched to the night time view (which is when 90% of the paranormal activity takes place), I was getting scared, as I knew something was going to happen.

If I had watched this movie with someone else in the room or the house or during the daytime, there is no way I would've been scared. I certainly wouldnt watch a horror movie in a Cinema, as the experience would be ruined.

Those who werent scared by this movie, did you watch the movie alone, in the dark, with nobody in the house?

EDIT: just checked this original ending on youtube. I prefer the new ending. Far scarier.

I saw this under ideal conditions (late night, dark room, etc.) and it did absolutely nothing for me. Several times I considered switching it off, but I finally persevered to the entirely predictable and utterly unclimactic end.

There were a few "jump" moments, but that's all. It felt utterly mundane; no atmosphere, no tension and no talent. Can't see what all the fuss is about.

Were you alone?
Had there been someone else in the house, the fright factor would've gone from 10 to 0.

The film plays on our own paranoia and belief in the supernatural. Lots of times, while watching the movie, I could hear my air conditioner (which was off), making creaking noises. Normally, I wouldnt even listen out for those noises, but considering what I was watching, every little creak was met with suspicion.

What is scary is what you can't see, not what you can.

Yes I was alone.

I totally agree! That's the sort of horror I love, which is why I expected to enjoy PA. But they never seemed to get the balance right and too many things were just totally illogical.

**spoiler**

Why did they sleep with the door open every night? Why did they never turn on the lights whenever they heard something in the room? Half they time they just blundered around in the dark, when the most sensible (and natural) response is to switch on a light. The characters just didn't act in realistic ways, which completely destroyed the realism of the scenario.

There was a scene where the "demon" slams the door shut and then hammers on it from the other side as if it is trying to get in. This makes no sense because we already know that it can open and close the door whenever it wants to. So why close a door just to hammer on it from outside? That's totally illogical and simply exposes the weakness of the script. The scriptwriters obviously wanted to increase the tension, but they went about it in a totally irrational way.

Examples could be multiplied.

lol i sat there and just laughed at how bad it was :D

I laughed when I wasn't cringing. It was just embarrassing to watch.

Perhaps they prefer to have the door open...force of habit maybe. For example, I live alone and always sleep with the bedroom door, ajar, in case of an intruder.

Why did they never turn on the lights whenever they heard something in the room?

They did eventually turn the lights on. It just wasnt immediate. It seemed natural to me. The final scene when he runs down the stairs in total darkness - he probably could've switched on the lights.

There was a scene where the "demon" slams the door shut and then hammers on it from the other side as if it is trying to get in.

I dont think he was trying to get in. He slammed the door shut hard to shock them and then banged on the door, hard, to shock them some more. The demon can walk through walls - we know this because after locking up the house (with an alarm system), he still roams free.

I really enjoyed the film when I saw it in the cinema. I think it's a great testament to what you can do with a camera, a really tiny budget and the confides of a very small set. It's so simple, it makes you think "Why didn't I do that?"

While admittedly I wasn't 'scared' as such, what it does however is really build up some great tension. There are a few shock scares thrown in which make everyone jump and I think it's good for this.

The film clearly relies on the old human fears of the dark, demons and what could happen to you while you sleep at night. It's something which I'm sure everyone can relate to at some stage in their life.

After the film finished, myself and my friends I saw it with were all discussing what happened and even retelling old stories of 'ghost encounters' from our childhoods. I think that to me is a sign of a good film.

There were a couple of young ladies sat next to me who had jumped their way through the film and clearly tried to put on a brave face after it finished. Claiming it was rubbish and one said she had fallen asleep. They were just laughing about it, but I'm sure when they went to bed that night, they were probably thinking about it!

I'd quite like to see the original ending, but it seems to get pulled whenever it goes up on Youtube, might have to wait for the DVD.
