The envoy had only met the woman a few times, during which she had hidden her face behind a niqab, the Gulf News reported.

After the marriage contract was signed, the ambassador attempted to kiss his bride-to-be. It was only then that he discovered her facial hair and eyes.

The ambassador told an Islamic Sharia court in the United Arab Emirates he was tricked into the marriage as the woman's mother had shown his own mother pictures of her sister instead of his bride-to-be.

He sued for the contract to be annulled and also demanded the woman pay him 500,000 dirhams (£85,000) for clothes, jewelry and other gifts he had bought for her.

The court annulled the contract but rejected the ambassador's demand for compensation.

The report did not identify the ambassador.

And here's a possibly accurate shoop:

haha....... ah i love it, you are insulting Muslims and appealing young men at the same time +2 bonus points. Hope Daily Mail do a slant on this.

The moral of the story is to thoroughly check the goods out before marriage. Would you buy a camel without a test drive?

I wonder how often this kind of thing happens.

It happens a lot and it's not "Islam" but instead the backwards tradition of the parents involved, most commonly the girl's who will do anything they can to get money. You hear about it all the time, girl x gets sent to India and is married to some rickshaw driver or whatever because she's now 19 and passed her sell by date (lols).

A modern Islamic family today for example will introduce the couple over a year before the actual marriage and they can see/talk each other etc if they want - this is of course after both have initially met and decided if they want to actually marry... it's not really THAT much different to a western marriage, just a lot, lot larger and lengthier (3 days vs 1 day).

I'm just saying!
