Well I thought I would start a thread on this game because its out soon and ive noticed zero discussion on this forum about it, which is criminal in my opinion. I feel like I'm the only one looking forward to it!!

Supreme Commander 2 is an upcoming real-time strategy video game developed by Gas Powered Games and published by Square Enix[5][6][7]. It is a sequel to Supreme Commander. Scheduled to be released in 2010 on March 2 for Microsoft Windows and March 16 for Xbox 360 exclusively.

Plot

The story starts with the newly elected president's assassination. A trailer for the game released at the Entertainment Software Association's 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo indicates that the story takes place twenty-five years after the conclusion of Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance, and centers on the breakdown of peaceful relations between the United Earth Federation, the Aeon Illuminate, and the Cybran Nation, implying that war has been instigated through a single bullet.

There was always a unit cap... in Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander. How could you never reach it if you played either of them :p

I have no doubt there is 1 (though i'd rather there wasn't), though i fail to see how you could know its 'too low' when throughout SupCom 1 it changed depending on the level and how far through the mission you were.

I have the first game + expansion still sitting in its box, maybe I should get around to playing it one day .. problem with PC's there are just too many good games about and not enough hours in the day !

After doing some of my own research I found this:

2nd from last chapter

The next big thing that we did is reduce the unit count from over 300 in the first game to around 120 or so. What this does is allow the player to learn the units then delve into the depths of the tech three. The tech tree is now this system by which you accumulate points, and can assign them yourself - range here, I'll throw some health, here's a demolisher mobile artillery unit...

Not sure if this is just for Xbox or what though, as in Supcom the unit cap was 500, 750 or 1000, not 300 as stated.

From what I have read about the game, it sounds like an completely different approach to the first game.

There is no economy and every unit can be invested in instead of being just a meat sheild. It also sounds like there will be comprehensive tech trees which will require xp to move through them not resources.

MP games will be shorter and arenas smaller.

It does sound like a different game imo, in a similar way that DOW2 was different to DOW1 (though probably not as extreme as those two)

Therefore I predict there will be people on here bashing it for not having features in the first (much like what happened in the DOW1 and DOW2 episode), and there will be those who will embrace the changes and new direction.

I like this approach, as if you like the first game mechanics then the first game is still there to enjoy. The second game will offer a different experience to the first - to what degree remains to be seen.

I have not pre-ordered but will watch with interest.

There is some form of economy/resource they just wanted to change from the SC1 arrangement as apparently a lot of people struggled with it

Sounds like this is going the same way as C&C4 , unit caps and a 'more involved gaming experience' according to the devs.

Why the hell won't they listen to what people want ! They are told time and time again that they are wrong !

Was going to pre order but won't now until I hear more about gameplay :(

sup come was around 1k this is in the low hundreds :/

they've pretty much got rid of the massive scale and gone for a more traditional and more marketable traditional scale.

basically it's now just any other rts with robot dinosaurs in. :(

From what I have read there are two resources: Energy and Research points.

Energy is from generators (I do not know whether these have to be built anywhere specific though). Research points sounds like xp. You can get them from killing enemies and building Research centres and generating them from there.

I do not know whether these two resources will interact at all. i.e: generating points requires energy, or whether higher level energy generators will require research points for example.

Technically i thought the first one was good (engine etc), but i couldn't sympathize or relate to any of the factions. Don't think i got past the first few levels because of that.

The problem is the fact that there are millions of retards in this world. Most of the people who buy computer games, are retards. So guess what? If a game wants to be commercially successful it has to pander to retards.

How the **** could people have been confused by the original, unique resource system? Jesus wept.

They've probably dropped the unit count for 2 reasons. One, the X-Box. And two, trying to shift a 1000 units over a map always caused pathing\speed issues.

I will however be pre-ordering, and will probably love the game as it will still be the best RTS around. Just not a scratch on what it could be.

I hope in amongst all the changes they haven't axed the strategic zoom or else the game is no longer sup com in my opinion!

I always struggled to max out my unit count no matter how high it was lol so don't mind if they keep things smaller (not too small tho obviously) - the mod i've got installed at the moment allows up to 2k of units!! I think my pc would die long before that was maxed :o

Lol, i like how they've pretty much dashed the hopes of everyone who enjoyed TA and SupCom.

This is no longer sounding like a massive scale RTS where you could throw waves of units at enemies for ****s and giggles as you set your own amount of resources available. Its sounding like yet another bunch of idiots as devs, trying to adjust the game to meet the needs of those incapable of understanding it and simultaeneously losing the interest of everyone who used to understand it. Command & Conquer has turned crap, Starcraft II is also looking crap and SupCom is going the same way, oh well.
