Because it's not meant to be a normal soft drink.
Reproducable personal experience... I've always had a bad reaction to artifical colors (makes me hyperactive, etc.) anyhow so its maybe not suprising I guess I'd be sensitive to artifical sweetners, etc. also.
If I drink 1-2 bottles of something like lucozade (aspartame) a day after a couple of months or so I start to get headaches, severe depression, dizzy spells, overactive bladder, etc. etc. goes away if I stop consuming anything with aspartame in.
Because some people don't like the side effects of the artificial sweeteners (for example many are carcinogenic)
Wonderful thoughtless, unresearched, scaremongering garbage.
I shall drink Diet Coke and Coke Zero every day till I die. And when I die, it shall not be from a sodding soft drink.
So no evidence then, just an anecdote of what is probably a placebo effect.
Its hardly ancedotal or placebo... it took me 3 years of experimenting to narrow down what was causing the problems - its only since christmas that I've been 100% sure it comes and goes with my consumption of aspartame.
There's nothing like a bit of exaggeration to hammer your point homeFunny you should say that, just today I was discussing with a friend how droll such statements are.
He said he would rather masturbate with a handful of razor blades than sleep with a certain woman. I merely pointed out he really wouldn't. Just like you would rather drink urine, sorry, diet coke, than be beaten to death.

Indeed, sir! There's nothing like a bit of exaggeration to hammer your point home![]()
Not really

The placebo effect is amazingly powerful.
How about because the diet versions taste like chemical sweetener? They are disgusting. Why do manufacturers still produce non-diet versions of soft drinks (Coca Cola, Irn Bru etc)? If they claim they " taste the same, but healthier ", then what's the point in producing a less healthy alternative?
I'm quite well aware - when I was working in a lab dealing with placebo effects was part of the job.
Then you should know that you are just as susceptible as anyone and that you subjective test probably isn't a valid one.
