Cut working week to 21 hours?

People like this have their heads in an idealogical cloud. Thank goodness no-one will ever listen to them.

Yes, its not a very well written piece of news anyway. no serious proposals as to how it could be achieved.

It would be more realistic to look at how to improve quality of life for families with young children who would benefit from more time in the week to raise their kids until they are of school age.

How to have people retire with independince and with choices.

Its almost as if its written to put people off taking the subject seriously and stifling debate.

Every time there is a recession more work is required and more and people are paying off their past living costs rather then living for the future. mass credit addiction, its a form of willful slavery

How about sod off...

Absolutely ludicrous, insane and utterly stupid idea with no redeeming features whatsoever to anyone who lives in the real world.

Another stupid Left wing idea to mess the country up, Haven't they done enough damage in Previous decades.
Yeah because the right wingers did SO much for this country
Twas a great day the day that thatcher went out.

This is a stupid idea but ALL government think tanks come up with monumentally stupid ideas, they should get rid of them completely, bunch of idiots paid to much to do nothing.

All this working less to become a better parent stuff is complete rubbish. When i was a nipper my parents both worked 70 hour weeks, I turned out pretty good I reckon.

It’s just pie in the sky only for those that can afford to do so. The rest of us have to continue living and working in the real world.

Stupid idea that hasnt been thought through. I doubt anyone could live on nearly half their current salary.

No the cost of manufacture is the measure of the effort put into making the product, form the effort to getting the metal out of the ground, the effort to transport the materials to the factory, the effort to assemble it etc. The cost in $ is merely the quantification of this into monetary terms and is largely tied to what everyone involved in making that product got paid for their effort.

Obviously profit is on top of this but for most items this is typically in the 5% range outside the realms of luxury items or otherwise limited supply.

I disagree slightly there, places like the mining industry have huge overheads before you get to staff pay which is why they try and work 24 hours a day as to them time is money, they can't just shut down a mine for 12 hours without incurring huge expenses.

21 hours is a bit steep, however 30 hours I would definately go for, 9-3 or 10-4 with plenty of hours to do what you want in the evening. There are also jobs out there that give you weeks of time of at a time, just need to get into the right industry.;)

I think that some businesses should look at their working week to discern whether the monday-friday 9-5 is really the most effective way to get the most out of their employees.

How many of you can honestly say you work a full 8 hours every day? If your employer told you, that you had to do x, y and z today and that you could go home once you had finished - would you work harder? Would you browse OcUK whilst at work?
dunno.gif

In a lot of jobs, if you work harder, achieve more during the working day what you'll be rewarded with... is more work.

Shhhh, thats dangerous thinking there! :p

People on low wages would die unless minimum wage was also increased at which point our economy suffers as we can't compete internationally.

I would be happy not to work Fridays, So maybe 32 hour week would be nice if I had to make a compromise.

But then again you can argue a lot of people don't try very hard at work perhaps by having more time off you might be a bit keener to put some effort in when you are there. But I doubt overall it makes financial sense.

Wouldn't be too bad if other nations implemented this as well which minimises the economic downside but of course they wouldn't especially the Chinese.

I am kind of right winged but I can't deny some kind of Liberal Utopia wouldn't be nice, I just think very unlikely and hard to achieve.

Thing is i'm one of those wierdos that would rather do 12 hour days for a week and then have a reasonable number of days off in a row. This whole weekend thing is stupid as you never really get enough time to do what you want, just the personal stuff you haven't been able to do during the week (hence supermarkets being busiest on a saturday etc.).

One thing to remember is that 10-12 hour days, 6 days a week weren't uncommon in the past for the vast majority of the population.

I personally think that it isn't that bad an inspiration but on an individual basis only. When my daughter was born I took a cut in hours and cut in pay (and prospects etc) so that I could do a four day week and have a 3 day weekend spending a full day with my daughter. Sure it meant we couldn't afford as much, but there are more important things in life than material goods.
