Slapping the highest number you can think of on a product box has long been one of the fail-safe strategies for selling your products, and it works more often than not. This however shouldn't always be so as SteelSeries’ CMO, Kim Rom, recently said how high and higher DPI figures touted on mice products mean pretty much nothing.

Indeed, DPI number has long been seen as something pretty important when purchasing a mouse, but Rom says that “in reality it doesn’t really mean that much”. He argues that, for instance, moving your mouse an inch on your desk for it to move twice the screen length might sound impressive, but it doesn’t really introduce any value or precision. Quite the contrary, in the latter case it will negatively affect what should’ve been your goal in the first place - precision.

Rom goes on saying that professional players on pro-tournaments, who depend on their equipment for their bread and butter, usually stay within 800 to 1,600 DPI limits, despite the fact that their equipment might support higher resolutions.

So there you have it, if you’re looking at buying a mouse and are looking at various numbers, there’s one more number not to pay much attention to. Quite refreshing if you ask us, as seeing someone downplay numbers is not an everyday occurrence in the IT world.

Makes sense too, I had the Razor Mamba and while it was great in normal DPI mode it was unusable on high DPI settings as was my MX1100, I much prefer 800-1000DPI and the stock DPI on my MX Revolution is nigh on perfect for Gaming and Applications.

And here's a picture of the best mouse ever ;)

I use my deathadder on 1800 dpi normally, 3500 is wayy too much for me. When im doing 3d work i put it down to 900 and turn sensitivity right down anyway.

The MX Revolution?

5-7 days battery life when used for gaming daily, excellent tracking and performance, SOME spike issue with wireless reported on some configurations but putting the dongle next to the desk via a USB extension solves the issue.

I would recommend the Performance MX over the Revolution as it's a logical upgrade and uses a new laser too.

yup i agree with the article, i have the razer lachesis, only use it on 1500 dpi, i find its perfect dpi setting for me...

looks are just as important, the light blue flashing razer logo goes well with my setup, and the sort of rubber texture feels great... had it for about 2 years now and hope its a mouse for life.

i agree i have used the following mice recently...bought all of them

G5 this is my favourite
Mamba....just didnt agree with me
Xai ok but not the G5
G500 had to use this due to the G5 having a problem with my mobo and now used to it and very similair to the G5

I use my mice at 500ms and 400-2000dpi as the G5 and g500 is switchable in game it helps for various things such as sniping, or when on BF2142 200dpi plus helps with getting those turrets round a bit quicker :)

I'm very confused.

Were I come from that's another word for a womans vagina....

What do you mean when you say it?

He means DPI is a load of balls.

Which is just fine for me, my microsoft basic is nothing special, 400dpi, it gets the crosshair there ^_^

Mouse = tool [insert bad workman quote]

I have a MX Revolution and can't fault it. For the few games I play it is fine, and for general use it is nice and comfortable. Good battery life too, which is helpful.

my mouse is a 2000DPI is good for me, how much does the performance have? the revolution is too low for me

i dont see the point having more then 2000 dpi as in some game options if u lover sensitivity to the minimum it will be still to fast. then u ending up lowering ur dpi just to play the game.

deathadder hits sweet spot with 1800

I use the middle setting on my mx518. Can't remember what that is dpi wise but the highest is too skittery and the lowest far too slow for CSS

i also have the mx revolution and although it is the comfiest mouse i have ever used and prob couldnt go back to anything else it not without its problems. Im on my second one and if it wasnt for me buying a hardwired logitech gx9 i would prob be on my third. the mx for gaming is just not so responsive and gets a lot of lag. Its as if it stutters. really big let down for such a nice mouse.

One of the best gaming mice is still the WMO 1.1a @ 400dpi.

Most lazers especially the 2000+ DPI one are actually pretty terrible for gaming.
