Ive had mass effect around 4-5 weekes (oht it from gamestation) just come to install it and noticed the disc is really damaged -_- Ieevr ted entering teh code on STEAM and downloading it like that t keeps saying invalid Serial. Would the serial i have work on an ISO do you think? :( Dont fancy paying out another £10.. just as well bought the 2nd one for £20 at the start -_-

yeah im pretty sure it would be fine, the serial is what you paid for so its not like you would be breaking the law by downloading a iso ;)

Loads of typos dude. In some sort of rush? lol

Yeah most people would do that anyway. Btw just to let you know just because steam have the game for sale it doesn't mean you can use your retail cd key to download the game. Valve only allow a few games as it's their servers.

So long as you have the license to play the game then you are perfectly entitled to download the ISO file assuming you use your own CD key.

I get the jist of the OP but jesus it takes 10 seconds to quickly look through and check its not full of errors that make you look liked a hyperactive 10 year old...

You've bought the game, its fairly irrelevant whether the source of the install is an ISO or from the disc, as for the CD Key, it depends on the game, but since ME is entirely offline i don't see how it matters.

It's legal to download, but if you also upload, that's illegal.

bingo, so if you want your morale compass facing north, stay away from the torrents :P

otherwise your fine to get the content, like somebody said above, you've paid for it already, you have a valid serial, it'd just be like getting it from a direct to drive style site.

Personally I wouldn't download an ISO.

A couple of reasons,
1) Just because it's an ISO you don't know that it hasn't been modified in any way, there could be loads of viruses hidden in the ISO file.
2) If your using a torrent, then if you upload then your really in trouble as you'll be sharing to people who may not have a key.
3) Your ISP may be monitoring your traffic as Virgin Media do and they may be able to inform others that you have been downloading content. Also under the law the ISP is obliged to share (abeit after a court order) any details of your traffic. While you may be able to longer term prove your innocence it will cause you grief.
4) One case recently when people downloaded adult content, hidden inside the package was a game (pinball if I remember correctly). The company who own the intellectual property for this game have employed lawyers to persue people for money in relation to this rather than go to court.

Best way is to try to find a friend who has the game and borrow it to install, otherwise, I'd wait until it is on the bay or the MM here and buy a copy second hand.

Probably not the response you wanted, but now you have the information you can make your own choice.

Cheers

Taff

From the EA HELP UK document in my mass effect 2 docs folder:

If you have determined that your CD has been damaged, you can return your CD for a sealed copy. To replace your software you will need a sales receipt dated within the 90-day warranty period. Electronic Arts warrants its software to the original purchaser that Electronic Arts' software is free from defects for a period of 90-days as stated in the manual. If the disk has been misused, or the 90-day warranty has passed, then a fee will be assessed to replace the software.

Fees:
PC products: £7.50 per CD

Probably easier to just download the ISO, just make sure you get it from a trustworthy source...

From Stooeh's post, looks like you're still in warranty, so I'd go that route. There's really no justification for the £7.50 charge outside of that, though - as I understand it, the cost of manufacturing each unit is miniscule and you already paid out for the license (which is the only thing you own), so there shouldn't be anywhere near that high a fee.

you might be able to enter your CD key into the EA Download Manager and get it from the EA site. not every game works like this though and it can be a bit fiddly to enter the code (try with dashes, without dashes, capitalised, uncapitalised)

I was about to post this suggestion. Might work.

You've already paid for the rights to the content.

The act of downloading from anything but a legit source is illegal. The key allows you to use the media provided plus make one copy for backup purposes only.

The only exception is getting another copy from a reputable source with the owners permission.
