GTX 285

I've just brought one, but I don't know how many watts my PSU is...

If it doesn't meet the requirements, will inserting and running the graphics card damage my computer, or will it just switch off?

If its a good PSU it would fail gracefully, if not it could go 'ca-boom'. Your best to find out what you have before trying. There should be a label with the details on the side of the PSU.

Hm, OK. Its just a stock PSU. (Which means it'll probably go ca-boom)

Oh well, I'll just order this:

OCZ StealthXStream 700watts. - That'll be good enough won't it?

Just for reference, I used to use a Tagan 520W which was 3 years old with a GTX 280 (Which uses more power than the 285) and it all ran fine

Should be no reason why not. I run a GTX280 on a 700W Tagan no sweat.

could you not get the model of the PSU? Or of the computer. The 600w version of that PSU was on offer @ocuk, not sure if it still is. That would power a GTX 285 easily.

I run a GTX275 on a Corsair VX 450w with a Q9550 @ 4.0GHz...

Am running two GTX 275 in SLI on my 720watt Enermax Infiniti PSU

(Plus the GTX 275 also draws more power then a GTX 285 does

)

A better question would why would you buy one now ATI have sorted supply issues on the HD5850's? A bit of blame bait question but seriously, I can't see where the value is in Nvidia's top end video cards at the moment.

As for the PSU don't just go by brand do some research and look up some reviews, unless the brand is Seasonic then there's no guarantee that all the voltage rails will be fully stable and keep within the ATX specifications, that's very important otherwise you might have an expensive brick in your PC.
