As Im selling my Z4 soon, Im on a money saving mission. I know I've posted about this quite a lot and many people thought it was kind of pointless as I'd only be getting a few grand towards a large deposit.

Initially my first choices were Clio 182 or Honda Civic Type R.

Clio 182 because I've always wanted one and was very close to buying one before my Z4. Civic Type R because I've always fancied a bit of Vtec and I like the looks.

After listening to some of your opinions, I've decided that the Civic is too expensive and would be pointless as I wouldn't be saving much and have about the same running cost as my Z4.

So.... that left me with the Clio 182.

I then started to think that maybe some of you were right and I should try to spend even less (without going for a car I will get zero enjoyment out of i.e Mondeo)

This left me with the following choices :

Spend £5300 on a Clio 182 with both cup packs.
Spend £4000 on a Clio 172 Cup.
Spend £3500 on a Clio 172.
(this is my least favourable option as it just looks too much like a normal clio to me)

What would you do?

The only thing putting me off the 172 Cup is the fact it has no air conditioning. I haven't driven a car without air conditioning for about 4 years so Im totally out of touch. How bad is it really?

EDIT : Im having trouble finding a 172 Cup for sale withing a reasonable distance from me that I can go and test drive :(

Honestly, if I was selling my car as a money saving mission, I'd spend 1k on something to get you about as cheaply as possible or it's a bit of a pointless exercise

Buy a £1k snotbag of a Fiesta or keep the Z4.

Seriously £5300 on a Clio + £500ish on bits and bobs to get it up to scratch like you need to with most cars of that type (will need a tyre or two, etc etc) and you've saved a whole £4000 after getting out of the Z4.

Well thats worth it.

Not.

Bank 9 grand and drive a 99 Ford Mondeo. Or keep the Z4.

Assuming this is house deposit?

I've been there - I got rid of a car I loved (my old Alfa) for a car boring car to save money so I could buy a house. More in terms of running costs, not capital outlay, but similar in some ways.

It's not the easiest thing to do, especially as someone who loves cars but when you start looking at flats because you've finally got the money to buy one, you couldnt care less what you drove there in :)

See above post. What you propose to do is totally pointless and you could end up trading a car that you know fairly well for something riddled with issues.

xsara vts for £1k, bank the £9k.

its ugly but who cares, brilliant car in same league as 172, and you just saved a massive deposit...

Guys Im not going to turn up to buy a house with a few grand I saved from my car... This is just the start of the saving.

I 100% see what you are saying and I completely agree its the best thing to do.

However, Im not buying a house tomorrow. Instead Im gettin myself in a position where I can save a hell of a lot easier, have a nice little lump to get me kick-started. I may not buy a house for another 12-18 months yet who knows.

I want about £15k in total which will take me a while to save. I still have a few months of payments on my Z4 left (personal loan) as Ive been paying it off quicker than planned. Granted £9000 will give me a better start but I don't think Im going to be in any position to actually purchase something until next year.

I love driving and I love cars. To drop to something like a 1.25 Fiesta would kill me. I thought something like a 172 Cup which would cost me around £4000 (probably less) was a pretty good compromise considering I was first looking at Civic Type R's at around £6500.

It will leave me with a nice little chunk that I can add to every week without making me cry every time I have to drive somewhere like a £1000 reliable car would probably do.

Start saving now and keep the Z4. Then sell the Z4 when it comes to handing over the deposit. It's a BMW Z4. It's not going to plummit below £7000 in the next 12-18 months I don't think :)

Are you sure you didnt just overstretch with the Z in the first place? If you can comfortably afford it, keep it, you'll be happier than in a little Clio or something.

Surely if the Z4 is financed anyway the £5k you 'save' will go towards paying off the loan so you'll gain nothing but not having to pay a few hundred quid a month on a loan

Just dont see what this acheives unless you couldnt afford the Z4 in the first place. Keep it until you need the cash, selling it to have cash you might perhaps maybe need in 2 years time seems weird.

You can get (fairly) reliable and Fun for around that sort of money.

Something along the lines of the Xstra VTS suggestion earlier would be ideal.

If you aren't going to use the money raised by selling it for about year then why not keep it... for another year?

Yeah, not much point going down the middle here. I'm saving for a house at the minute (hopefully should be moved in by summer). I could comfortably afford it tomorrow if I sold my Z, but I'd prefer to have both. Bit o' patience, lad!

I agree with Fox's sentiment, but there has to be a balance of some sort. Driving a 99 mondeo, a car that they finished making 10 years ago, would be depressing. At least a Mk3 Ghia X looks tidy and has creature comforts and it'd still save him a fair bit more cash.
