Lotus has revealed a raft of revisions for the Elise, including new engines, a new gearbox and some major styling tweaks.

Norfolk's favourite roadster is getting on for a decade-and-a-half old now, and Lotus has decided to give it its most significant nip/tuck since it morphed from S1 to S2 form back in late 2000.

The most obvious changes are cosmetic. Redesigned and repositioned light clusters (which include LED daytime running lights for the first time) sit further towards the edges of the car. These, combined with the new wider grille help to give the Elise a more Evora-esque look. The front bumper, splitter and clamshell have also been tweaked.

Less has been changed at the rear, with only a new bumper and engine cover to talk about. Overall it seems to be a pretty successful and sympathetic styling update but, frankly, we're just glad that the Metro-sourced door mirrors are still in place...

Underneath the bonnet (oh, all right, underneath the bonnet of the base S model), there's a new 1.6-litre Toyota mill (the first time an Elise has had anything other than a 1.8-litre powerplant). This cuts CO2 emissions to 155g/km, with the 134bhp power output not dropping over the outgoing 1.8-litre S.

The 189bhp R and 218bhp supercharged SC carry on using their 1.8-litre engines, but all models get a brand new close-ratio six-speed gearbox.

Other tweaks include two new types of alloy wheel and optional cruise control (surely shome mishtake!?).

The revised Elise hits UK showrooms from April, and prices are unlikely to be greatly changed from the £26,550 of the current S.

Ohh how they have ruined the look of this car. No doubt they've improved the driving characteristics but the S2 was such a great looking car. The S2 really looked like it could attack the corners but this revised model looks like it could tickle the corners to death.

Hopefully we'll see some S2s dropping in price with the release of the new model :)

S2 is 10 years old. The new Elise face is more in line with the Evora style cues.
Don't mind the 1.6 - almost the same power but more efficient.
Gearbox - good change.

Pretty inoffensive overall.

Here is a pic I just found comparing old & new.

I wasn't overly keen on the new styling but this pic makes the old S2 look very dated in my eyes. As with all new Lotus cars, the shape seems to favour certain colours more than others.

Definitely got to get a test drive in the 1.6 to see what it is like.

It looks like they have taken the Evora styling to the Elise, which is a shame. The Evora looks great and the Elise looks great, but the mish mash of the 2 just doesnt work.

But as for the drive train changes, I can see that being a good call. As said, same power from a smaller lighter engine and a new better gearbox can only be a good thing. Hopefully prices of the other models will drop now.

Is this going to be called the S3, or will it be just an S2 refresh that everyone other than Lotus will call the S3?

Looks like this is just a facelift of the S2 with a few tweeks as there is meant to be an 'all new' Elise in 4 years time

Really don't like the new look at all. What is it with press release pictures being orange these days as well? Makes the car look even worse imo

How heavy is it this time around, probably the same as 2 of the first one.

Don't think weight has been mentioned yet but I wouldn't be suprised if it is heavier than the early S2. It has cruise control so thats more weight for a start.

Saying that, I don't think Lotus would be allowed to make another car like the S1 Elise what with ever tightening regulations and health & safety legislations.

Shame if that is the case as the way things are going it seems as though they are getting further & further away from the point of the car and the Lotus philosophy with each model.
