I heard on the Radio yesterday (Radio 1) lunch time two female mechanics talking to each other as one thought she was the only female mechanic in the country and it got me thinking...

Are female mechanics a bad thing or are they good? Do you think female drivers with a problem would be more trusting of a female mechanic looking at their cars? Would you like a female mechanic working on your car if it's something more than your standard euro econo box?

I'm just musing here as I have a few friends who are mechanics and they have always been dismissive of female mechanics, claiming they would need help with heavy lifting work etc, and I'm interested to hear other peoples thoughts.

I know a female mechanic, and two in training to be (one college, one army).

Personally, I wonder about the mentality of a female that is a mechanic, I mean, butchness must ensue, plus smashed knuckles etc. so its certainly not someone I'd want to go out with, but working on my car, no problem, assuming they work for a garage I trust.

What she doing there, get back in the kitchen :D [/sexist comment]

Based on my experience of Nissan's female service manager, I wouldn't let a woman near my car for anything other than a lift. Saying that, the vast majority of male mechanics leave me with worry.

I'm of the same opinion I would not mind her working on my car if it was for a trusted garage, as one would assume she would have had to work hard (probably twice as hard as the male mechanics) to get to where she is.

are you having a laugh? who even trusts male mechanics?!

ive not come across many techie girls yet, in the sense theyll get grease under their nails, but know a few whose knowledge of mechanical stuff knocks spots off most guys out there

I'd assume her being service manager would mean she sits at a desk, not actually working on any cars?

Yet, she needs to have understanding of the servicing and mechanics of cars to a certain degree surely? As she manages the mechanics? Or at least, being in that position you would understand enough to get you by?

That's my point, it can be very daunting for a female to take her car in to a garage for any level of work for fear of being ripped off, but they could have the perception that as a female mechanic is looking at the car they could be less likely to get shafted and get honest advice with an honest quote, without the 'female' tax.

Female Mechanic?

Your average woman could not be trusted near anything mechanical, but there is always going to be some with man like abilities.

Personally the only person I trust with my car is my dad.

I've never met a female mechanic, but I don't really see what difference it would make.

they think differently, sometimes more organised so it woudl be interesting to see how theyd tackle a job.

i have my own ways when im stripping something down, doing bits in stages. ill even admit that i had a tiny bit of fear creep into me when i was stood infront of my S4, front end off and block stripped back so it had no water pump, no belts, nothing and i had to sort it all out

I'd let a female mechanic fiddle with my gear stick. Hur hur.

On a slightly less ridiculous but more sexist and generalising note: one thing I've noticed about women is that whilst they can take things apart, they are generally rather poor at working spatially and therefore being able to put them back together. A rather important part of mechanics I feel.

My wife's friend is a mechanic, and she's very good too, and kinda hot aswell.

She works at the local Mercedes garage (electronic testing and fault diagnosis i think), but was actually trained by her dad who was a proper old school backstreet greasemonkey (she went to college aswell)

I also recently found out that she has a degree in mechanical engineering too, Clever girl.
