Have a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 on the way and it will be going into my antec p180 case. Currently, I have a gtx280 gfx card and using an 8800gtx as a phsyx card. Performance is fine but the problem is I have a sbxfi elite pro which takes up a pci slot, so the only place for the 8800 to go is the end pcie slot. Unfortunatelys with a double slot card this means it sits over mobo usb headers/ide/sata etc. and also makes the cables coming out the bottom compartment a squeeze. It's doable but I have to lose usb/firewire, not ideal! I will have the same problem with the new mobo. So really, im wondering if there are any decent single slot cards for use as physx? Batman recomends a 9800gtx for phsyx which seems a lot! Has any site benched cards just for their physx ability?

thanks

What about 9800 GT cards? OCUKs all seem to be dual slot, but this one might be single http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-025-PV&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1009 hard to tell!

Yeah, but they're practically the same as the 8800GT. If they use the reference cooler they should be single slot but I don't think anyone's bothering with those anymore.

Yeah, but they're like rocking horse poo :(

whats the point? clearly silly if they say you need a 9800gtx for physx.
why won't they release a separate ppu optimised for physx, would still cost a bomb but "keep your old cards for physx" clearly isn't worth it imo

lol, there was, the aegia physx card, just sold mine for 13 quid. oh wait... they wont support it as it doesnt have their name on it...

Ok, after some research:

Clearly shows that going less that 9800/8800gt is a big mistake, and getting a 9400 gives you WORSE performance.

In this article you can see that using a gtx275 as physx gives you barely better than a gts250 (and by that account, the gts260 will probably be no better). the 250 performs quite a bit better than the 9800GTX.

So, it seems that the GTS250 is a good card for physx, however most of them are dual slot. But, I could probably do with a dual slot one if it's only the fan thats a bit bigger, i could probably still access my mobo ports

That seems like it would do the job, and isn't too pricey! I could probably sell my 8800gtx for most of the price of that!

Just want to say I'm selling my GTS 250 and have replaced with a 9800 GT since it's single slot (Zotac 9800 GT synergy). This card sits at minimum fan speed on auto so is basically silent. Batman physx bench seems pretty much the same scores as before and it overclocks back up to normal 9800 GT speeds without needing power connector. Now my 480 is running cooler as it doesnt have another card right next to it. Wins all round!
