ok AVP dropped through this morning i've installed it but using the disc you HAVE to create a steam account.

Now my question i have a new 1TB HDD coming next week, when i unistall AVP do i have to untie it from my account or something or do i just re-install it again i don't want to mess up and end up with a game a can't play

you can't untie the game from your Steam account. Once it's registered, it's yours forever.
you can download the game via Steam an infinite number of times, and you can install Steam an infinite number of times (although you don't need to, it can run from a seperate drive without being installed).

hrmm does it say on the back of the case that a steam account is required to play the game?

If so bit dissapointing as i was going to get this but wont...not really a fan of steam.

Steam games don't install. Once you get your drive, all you need to do is download the steam client from the website then move your games folder from your old drive to the new steam folder.

I was never fussed on steam but it just sits there in the background unobtrusively so no reason not too have steam. You can always uninstall it when you finish playing the game? Plus steam have crazy bargains on games regularly so there may be somethign of interest there as well?

steam is a great platform to host all your games upon. you'll be glad to have everything within one easy to use program/system. i love having the majority of them on thier. bought BC2 for an extra fiver purely so i dont have to mess around with discs :)

Once you link it to steam you don't need the disk any more you just redownload it from team as many times as you like :)

Al,though when you want to reformat etc you can just back up the steam folder and copy pste it to the new install, run steam on new system and it will work.

But yeah you can reinstall from the disk any number of time without having to do any thing o nuninstall.

You mean like...say Windows?

And what about patches etc? Steam does it all for you. Always up to date. Can just copy the whole folder across between drives (I keep mine backed up on my network). Steam community is pretty good, better than XFire.

Steam really is damn good at what it does!

Steam gets me because I'll buy something thinking I'm bound to sit down and play it one day.

I have so many games I haven't even got past the config screen.

Yes...who do these heretics think they are to question the compulsory installation of the Steam's software? They don't seem to realise that it's all for their own good.

Amen to that. I did exactly the same. Much easier that messing about with discs and manually updating!

i agree :) back when i first got the original hl2 it seemed like a pain in the arse to have to run steam whenever i wanted to play it but as my games list on steam started to grow it made me wish all my games were on there :p

i can see how first timers to the service will see it as annoying tho

Steam is actually pretty good these days - not like the somewhat buggy/bloated, randomly CPU sucking version it used to be. Compared to the likes of the GFWL client its unobtrusive and sits in the background no problem and can actually be useful.

how can you be disappointed somethings on steam? It uses next to no ram or CPU power, its a simple login that you would probably have to do in the game anyway, except its one nice easy login for everything in there, it lets you backup, theres never any real faffing with problems with it etc.

Some people whinge for the sake of it, its arguably one of the best pieces of gaming software released in the past decade. Why wouldnt you want a hub for all your games with its own built in community features, friends list, one simple login, unlimited downloads of your games etc?

First thing I install on a fresh install is Steam. Copy my Steamapps folder over from my backup drive and bobs your uncle.

I ****** hate messing around with discs....... Can't remember last time I bought a game from the shop. I use the community and friends feature a lot too.
