New ....Netgear DGN3500. Gigabit and usb2 sharing. DGN2000 is cheaper less functions. I dont touch other brands so this is a netgear route for N based stuff

thanks for the advice mate.

I have the 2000 model on my shortlist but the 3500 will be considered after some research.

Thanks again.

You realise you have to use their supplied router or extract the user-name and password from it ,don`t you?

Hi there,

No i didnt know that, cant i just buy say the 3500 and install and use?

How hard is it to extract the password to use with new router?

You can get the user-name and password out of the supplied router, but i can`t say how difficult it is to do.Google will help i believe

I have looked into it and it isnt that hard, its pretty easy as long as the guides i read are still working as they was a little old.

Thanks for the heads up its most appreciated.

sky will know if you are using a third party modem router and can restrict your speeds if they want as you will be breaking the T&C.
I would not advise this.

What happened?

Just proof (forum where it's happened to a lot of people, a letter from sky etc...)

I know it breaks the T&C, but can't see them investing time and money in it.

I swapped my router out for something else for a few weeks, at which point the line started resetting every couple of hours and speeds went down.

I'd advise getting a 802.11n access point instead, and disable on the on-board Wi-Fi.

I couldn't point you in the direction of a forum that has a lot of people on it saying that it has happened to them. I have know idea how much time and money they invest in it.

All I can say is that I changed my modem router from the one that sky provided to a belkin wireless N modem router.
All was fine for about three days, then I noticed that my speed had dropped (not by a massive amount, but I can only get 2.5meg download, so any drop is noticed).
As I was very busy at the time I decided to call them at the weekend rather than straight away.
The next day I received a call from sky saying that I was in violation of the T&C and they would not put my speed back up untill I had changed my modem router back to the one that they supplied.
Almost as soon as I changed back to their modem router my speed went back up just like they said it would.

That said, I have heard of a lot of people changing their modem router and not having any problems, but then, I do work for sky and so might have my account monitored in a different way to normal customers.

lols

Spoof the mac ;)

Like that would make a difference!

The routers run custom firmware that enables Sky to remotely log into the router and change the settings. I've had at least two remote firmware upgrades in the three years I've been with them.

Indeed, changing the router can cause all sorts of problems as Sky seem to be looking into this more and more (check the skyuser.co.uk forums for more in depth details)
