81% in favour of a strike . . . but not over Easter

Don't BA staff already get paid a lot more than other airlines?
Indeed they do. Meanwhile . . .

British Airways is facing a lengthy strike by cabin crew next month after employees voted strongly in favour of a walkout.

Some 81% of the cabin crew backed strike action following a row over staffing cuts and proposed changes to working conditions. The turnout was 80%.

The strike dates have yet to be announced but Unite has ruled out an Easter strike after adverse public reaction to the Christmas strike. It must also give BA seven days' notice of strike dates.

A recent poll held by Bassa, Unite's cabin crew branch, has indicated strong support for a walkout lasting longer than 10 days. (The Grauniad)

I hope BA downsize due to market conditions making thousands of staff redundant. That'll serve them right.

Indeed and i for one hope they do...i use BA quite a bit but looks like ill be taking my business elsewhere...shame as i dont think punishing BA for a bunch of greedy muppets is the way to go about it but i cant afford to lose money on booking flights only later to find out that the dates i fly on are coinciding with the strikes.

Yes, all the pilots, baggage handlers, administrative staff - serves them right for not striking!

I hope that BA management come to their senses and start treating the staff with the respect that they deserve, instead of taking pointless short-term management decisions like getting an injunction. BA should be the world's favourite airline, so stop trying to make it like PikeyAir.

It would be interesting to hear these guys take on it, I'm guessing cabin crew aren't too popular with their colleagues to be honest.
Cabin crew (Unite) are NEVER popular with pilots (BALPA) who see themselves as being "special". As a result, neither side ever supports the other when it comes to strike action. This was apparent when BA pilots voted in favour of a strike last year following BA's formation of "OpenSkies".

Exactly, maybe they should question the wisdom of antagonising the cabin crew by volunteering as strike breakers. The point is that striking benefits no-one in BA, that's why the decision to go on strike is never taken lightly.

Actually I believe that this is already happening:
We understand a number of pilots have responded to BA's call for volunteers to keep the airline operating through any strike and from their postings it is clear that this is out of concern for their own futures and that of other employees. (BALPA Website)
I suspect that BA pilots will start to bring packed lunches on flights from now on :D

I do wonder of the mentality of people who would strike over changes that don't effect their contractual terms (as confirmed by the high court) and how anyone can say that their behaviour isn't simply bullying and intimidation in the workplace as a result.

The cabin crew and the Unite union are being completely unreasonable, and I look forward to the resulting further diminishment of the much abused power to strike over nothing at all under the next administration.

You mean a return to the selfish, greedy Thatcherite mantra of "There is no such thing as society, just *ankers who deserve huge bonuses for gambling with your savings"

;)

No, I mean a return to a responsible society where individuals have to accept the consequences of their actions...

(I won't cover your deliberate misrepresentation of the purpose of Thatcher's speech for the nth time. Your lack of ability to debate honestly means it isn't worth my time)

Striking should be subject to a reasonableness test with the unreasonable party being required to pay damages to all those affected by the strike (including customers, businesses, and taxpayers for any revenue lost). If you believe this to be an attack on the unions, it only further reinforces my belief that the unions are generally unreasonable when it comes to strike action...

Good luck to them and I hope they get what they want.

Nice to see a bit of fighting spirit in the UK.

So you advocate a small group bullying to get people to cede to unreasonable demands that will have a long term negative effect on everyone involved in the setup?

Well, it's a position I suppose... Do you think that the cabin crew will be able to maintain their salary and perks if the airline goes into bankruptcy?

Hold on Dolph it's you that is saying "unreasonable demands" and as for "long term negative effect on everyone involved in the setup"

citation needed on that please.

You have a lot of ifs and buts in that post. I tend to like people that stand up for themselves and not get down trodden.

They are imho these people are so much better then some people that just moan & whing but do bugger all about it.
