Can we keep this in General Discussion because I'd like to discuss this as a whole not just as a TV thread.

It's a bit weird really when you look over to the US and see the sheer amount of successful late night talk shows that you get every week night (to my knowledge) compared to what we get over here. In the US and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong you get:

Jimmy Kimmel
David Letterman
Conan O'Brian
Carson Daly
Jay Leno
Jimmy Fallon

I often look to see interviews and skits that happen on these shows on YouTube.

Now when you look over to this side of the pond we get Graham Norton (frankly I'd rather poke my eyes out and have my ears torn off than watch) and the once weekly for about a 20 weeks of the year of Friday Night with Jonathan Ross which of course will be off the air when he leaves the beeb.

So why is it that the US has so much more success in this area, I for one would love to see a talk show @ 11pm, just not one with Johnny Vaughn.

1. New shows don't attract enough big names
2. Brits seem to be divided in opinion over most celebs which means a popular host is hard to find
3. For some reason, ANY chat show over here seems to be more of a magnet for criticism than any other kind of TV show

Parky > all

I miss parky. :(
If its even possible, we need to find another and pronto.

I think they're more successful because they are more active/energetic & bigger population + scope. Which is what wossy does. Not my style, prefer more serious interviews that dont plug a new movie etc too hard.

The working population of the UK don’t watch late night chat shows during the week as most of them are in bed by eleven.

Because they're just a boring opportunity for shameless 'celeb' self promotion.

I like to think that it's because we're not so infatuated with celebrity here and that the presenters don't just blow smoke up the bum of the guest, but are willing to take the pee out of the person.
I'm probably wrong though.

Yes, I think it was on Charlie Brookers screen wipe or something but basically the celeb gets all the say on the questions and boundaries of the interview so it turns into a place for self promotion only and no probing questions or interesting topics. Maybe we just won't watch that rubbish over here. And Celebrities won't have it any other way so the result is no show.

Chat shows work because like even in a movie, they might only get 10 minute screen time, and that is only seen by the audience who actually bought a ticket. Where on a chat show, you can easily get 20 min one on one , uninterrupted on air time to millions of viewers with the Host really bigging up your name and performance.

The UK tv viewing figures is much lower (smaller population too), and apart from Ross, the rest are crap basically.

Because talk shows are crap?

Basically yes.

The public just don’t want to watch boring celebrities on the box when they have enough of them in their papers. The sad ones ones that find celebrities interesting are happy with Hello and OK magazines.

And the trash that inundates our screens for most of the year such as I'm A Tediously Debatable Crap Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here, and Peter & Katie's 'We'll die if you stop giving us attention' crass reality T.V.
