Emo or Goth

EMO's are whiney little bitches. To answer your statement, you have obviously never visited Glasgow's Cathouse. Goths can be extremely hot, and you can trust me on that one. ;)
That'd be because it's ouuup north. But as always, mail in trust ;)

If we're going to stereotype, I'd say the opposite if anything.
Hmm, round here it's definitely Emos above Goths. <Wishes he were back at school>

Ok I think I need pictures of classic emo Vs Goth types

Also examples of musicThing is, as a late 30s guy I know exactly what a Goth is, or at least was.

Are goths still around or have they interbread and become Emos?

What the hell does Emo mean anyway???

No goth would knowingly create an emo, even with breeding as an incentive :D

One of the defining traits of a goth* is a sense of theatre. Hence the lace, the makeup, the improbably-heeled boots, the plunging corsetry, velvet etcetera etcetera. The downside of this is vanity.

Another important characteristic is sophisticated tastes; goths have a tendency toward this nebulous thing called 'culture' - literature, art, and other intellectual/sensory pursuits. The downside of this is poetry.

Contrary to what the otherwise wonderful QI would have you believe, goths tend to be pacifists; they'd much rather be aloof and amused/bemused onlookers than get weapons bloodied. For goths, the pen is indeed mightier than the sword. The downside of this is poetry again. And Livejournal.

Of course, there are wrist-slashin' self-hatin' parent-worryin' goths too. Mentallists abound in all social groups.

* And by 'goths' I mean the traditional, or 'trad' goths. There are also cyber goths and probably steamgoths and suchlike. I've been out of the scene for a few years...

From observation:

Goths tend to dress in dark/black clothing, usually kinda Victorian inspired such as corsets, veils along with spikes and fishnets, or occasionally combat gear, so a mix of clunky and streamlined, old and new. There seems to be two kinda; grungy type goths, who tend to wear more combat stuff and look like really messed up bare knuckle fighters, and those who dress in a way that is more inspired by mythology or classic victorian dressware.

Emo tends to be more about trying to 'out-different' other emos. They started with dressing in mainly black and being dark, then one bright kid thought "If I wear pink and listen to dance music, i'll be more different", then everyone else caught on. Things like skinny jeans, plimsole shoes, tight band tshirts (Or the new 'in' thing appears to be 'retro' or 'geek-chic', so Mario tshirts), tight hoodies, usually with the hood pulled up.

The main difference I find, is that a Goth mindset is "I'm different and i'm fine with that. You know it, I know it, deal with it", whereas an Emo mindset is "I'm different, I need to make you know this, so hopefully listing off lots of obscure bands will help you realise this".

I gave up trying...a lot of my friends are in both of these social catagories and I CBA asking them questions about it.

They like either gaming/sports/cars/girls then that's good enough for me :D

Bang on. Most emo's are only in it for the fashion, not the music. Emo is the in thing at the moment, has been for too long and sadly I can't see it going away yet :(.

Goths are more intelligent and intellectual than Emos afaik.

Emos are vain and wear clothes that don't fit. They also aren't necessarily about the music either.

Emo's are like Lemmings, they follow whatever their mates do. Until they grow older and realise you cant live your life like that.

Lots of amusing stereotypes going on in this thread from people who actually don't have a clue to what 'goth' is, I suggest reading something that isn't a badly designed page by a 14 year old or Wikipedia :)
