Official 5830 reviews

Supply might be bad, but demand at £200 will be non-existent, with the exception of the odd idiot.

Graphics cards have gotten so boring lately. Markets in serious need of another 8800GTX - in terms of awesomeness, that is.

I've never really understood the pricing of any of the 5x00 series cards. I grabbed my 4850 not long after launch for £100, it's direct replacement in this new generation (5850) is still over twice as much 5 months after it launched. I'm not saying they are bad cards perfromance wise, far from it, but they should have given them a new naming scheme or not priced them so high.

With each new generation a perfrormance increase should be a given, you shouldn't have to pay the same amount or more 'bang for buck'.

On average across all resolutions (from 1024 x 768 through to 2560 x 1600) the 5770 is only 6% behind.

ATi certainly took a wrong turn with the 5000. I thought it was bandwidth but it isn't. 1120 SP at 800Mhz is no faster than an 18 month old 4870 1GB with 800SP at 750Mhz.

Indeed. People were hoping that Fermi was another 8800GTX in terms of performance increases from the previous generation but with recent articles posted on many websites it doesn't seem like it will provide the same performance boost we saw with the 8800GTX. Sure it will be a powerhouse for people that fold but for gaming people don't expect much.

ATI on the other side will probably release a new architecture in 2010 but unfortunately on 40nm. While they now have a good knowledge of what can be done on 40nm l doubt the 6800 will offer amazing performance increases at least on 40nm, so the chances are that we will not see anything special in 2010. Probably, 28nm in 2011 will allow both Nvidia and ATI to get a bit more creative with their existing or soon to be released architectures.

Christ, these cards are a let down, the performance is closer to the 5770 than the 5850 and yet the prices on OCUK are £200+ ...........what a joke ! its nearly priced the same as the 5850 but performs more like the 5770...... I was previously thinking this would be my next card, now I'm thinking I'll get a 5850.. maybe thats ATI's plan?

Atleast the mem bus is back up to fullfat. But the ATI offerings have been disappointing so far (after all the hype and positive expectation last Autumn). Scares me to think what and how much the refresh will be come Q4 2010 if the current prices are already so high.

I have 2 5770's at the moment but am sorely tempted to sell them and go with Nvidias offering come the summer just to vote with my feet as it were (obv the fact that I haven't 'upgraded' my rig since last October has nothing to do with it :p)

Hmm, I'm just wondering if this marks the end of 5850's priced nearer £200 ? looking around the I can't find 5850's lower than about £250 and now there is 5830's on pre order all sitting in the low £200 range. I hope I'm wrong.

Edit: searching a little harder there are some places with 5850s still around 220 notes, can't see why anyone would buy a 5830 at 200+, its just daft.

Performance_____Price
5770 -6%_______5570 -42%
5830___________5830
5850 +34%______5850 +6%

enough said.

It's really simple, no competition.

Aye i guess you're right. Strange though, you would think that ATI would price the cards fairly so they could soak up as much of the market as possible. As it stands i see so many people saying they are holding off buying any card until Fermi hits, either because that might be good or at the very least ATI will (hopefully) cut prices.

If they had just come in at a good price from day one i think ATI would have really grabbed a good size market share.

I am interested in Fermi personally because it can accelerate one of the apps i use, but if the 5xxx series had come in at a good price i probably would have just got one and continued without CUDA as i am now.
