Gaddafi Urges Holy War Against Swizterland

Don't worry, they have knives that can become corkscrews or that weird hook one you aren't quite sure what it's for, at a moment notice -- they'll do fine on their own.

If swiss people voted in majority for the banning of minarets, then thats democracy for you. Ive got no problem with that, thats what they voted for then so be it, but urging a jihad against them is taking it too far.

Correct: a minority of racists, mostly in the German speaking part, voted to ban minarets. A majority of people just didn't vote on the issue. I can assure you, not a single swiss person i know voted in favor of banning minarets and all are very upset by it.

In any case, it is likely the ban will be overruled by the federal government and instead tighter legislation about the architecture will be brought in.,

And anyway, the reasononing for Jihad has very little to do with the temporary banning of Minarets, but is almost exclusively to do with the Swiss police arresting one o fGaddafi's sons. This has been in the papers weekly for years now over here.

Surely if they didn't vote against the ban they've nothing to complain about?

They did vote against the ban. The problem is, for many people they are not motivated to vote when it is not mandatory. Therefore, a vast majority of people did not want to ban minarets but did not put in the effort to vote and just assumed that the law wouldn't be passed anyway. Hence a few cantons with known high-levels of racial hatred and pro-Nazi campaigners succeeded in getting Minarets banned. The failure of democracy.

Utter nonsense.

The whole Swiss population voted on the minaret issue and a majority voted for a ban. The Swiss are not racist (1 in 7 Swiss residents are foreigners), nor do they want to restrict religious freedom (there are over 150 mosques). However, Switzerland is a very beautiful country and the Swiss did not want that changed with 40 feet towers dotted around their chocolate box landscape.

I don't think the Swiss are racist, they just stand by their principles. There are plenty of Jews, Muslims and other creeds in Switzerland, just as there are synagogues and mosques and other places of worship.

They just didnt' want to have their landscape changed or have their culture altered for a minority religion in their country. It's not racist at all. They welcome diversity, as long as it is integrated into their way of life. They are proud of their country and the way it is run and is (and it's a fabulous country) and want to keep it that way. Does that make them racist? Of course not. It makes them patriotic and independent. I'm pretty sure the majority of the residents voted and not just the German side of it, but I don't know for a fact about this.

Have to agree with Spie and FF. Lived in Switzerland for over a year and it was very evident that they are a quiet yet friendly bunch of people who like to preserve their countries traditions and beautiful landscapes.

How many years have you lived in Switzerland??

Switzerland is the most racist country I have every lived in. Over the last 4 years I've had friends that have been hospitalized for being foreign, my GF has been swore at at and spat at due to being foreign, I know someones car which was covered in racist graffiti. Every week I will see overt racism on the public transport.

I know plenty of people who live in Switzerland. I can't imagine what hell-hole you live in but I have never heard of such behaviour.

In any case, what you have described happens every day in every European country, including the UK. It's not nice but there are bad people everywhere.

To suggest the Swiss are racist is complete nonsense. It's just an argument used by the left when they don't get their own way.

By the way voter turnout was unusually high for the minaret vote at 53% (compare that to UK or EU elections). The ban was passed by 57% of voters.

For those that think the German speaking part of Switzerland is small, it isn't and represents 65% of the Swiss population.

I think you've just had an unfortunate experience. I've heard of similar stories all around the world. I see lots of that in other cities I visit, and have lived in, as well as other countries. If you look for it it'll find you, sometimes it'll find you even if you're not looking for it. There are bad people all around the world.

I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience, but I think it's a very isolated case and not a de facto occurence within Switzerland alone - so tarring it with the "racist" brush is unfair and incorrect.
