Virgin Media to launch 100mb service

No they wouldn't. They'd need to supply the DOCSIS 3.0 compatible modems, the router STILL couldn't care less.

Router, modem, i got mixed up. If they needed to supply a modem, i doubt they would do it for free. Great if they did, unlikely for free though. They will probably offer a one off cost for the modem and a free upgrade. But you would still need to pay for the modem, which would be fine imo.

I kinda disagree.

The reason why 50Mb-er get new routers is due to 802.11g routers not being able to provide 50Mb/s bandwidth over wireless where 802.11n could.

Last thing they need to 1,000's of people a day complaining that they are only getting 30Mb/s on the 50Mb/s service.

This is the reason they do supply "n" routers, but they don't "need" to in order to get the service to "work".

i would rather them up the upload speeds to something decent first. 1.5 up on 50 meg is a joke.

Think they are trialing 10mb up (could be 5mb, can't remember but i think its 10mb) for the 50mb package. I'd expect that to roll out the same time as the 100mb.

that is what you get when you have a socialist media doing stories on socialist BT

this is why the BBC should be privatised cause they tell us who to vote for and are pro NHS and pro BT which are all government connected. no matter how expensive or poor quality the service is. makes me sick.

You've been reading to many dailytech comments me thinks  or are you an American working in the UK? Either way you are talking nonsense.

It was the arrogance of the BT spokesperson that got me. Virgin are proposing a 100Mbps service for the end of the year for all its customers and BT can't even get 40Mbps rolled out to a decent number of users.

Who are the BT customers using 100Mbps, businesses that have paid 10K to get the line installed!?

even though it doesn't make up for there PR mumbo jumbo, i'd say they were talking aobut their "Fibre to the Home" (not FTTC) service which i think is offering speeds like that for reasonable prices, but it's rare.

Gah, I haven't even tried 50mb yet.
Was on 20 for awhile for free (3months) and I loved it.
God knows what I'd need 100mb broad band for!
thats like 6seconds for one 30min HD episode.

Wee bit off in your calculation there ;)

100Mbit connection is ~10-12 MB/sec download rate.

Assuming your HD TV show is ~1GB, it'd take 100 seconds or so to download (assuming of course a P2P network could saturate it, which I doubt!).

VM have only just got my 50Mb working after six months and 7 techs the way it should be

But I will take the 200Mb cheap please :D

It was the arrogance of the BT spokesperson that got me.
And VM claiming their DOCSIS-over-a-broadcast-network broadband is "fibre optic" doesn't? Why would a spokesperson for BT say "wow that's quick. we might as well give up", it's their job to promote their employer.

BT have been trialing their 100Mbps service down in Kent for around 8 months now? Thought that was old news...

*EDIT* First google result: clicky!

And the whole thing with VM expanding to "growing" areas etc, just moved to a new housing estate just outside of Norwich, where around 2000 homes are being built - no cable network capabilities, so shocked by that it was unreal. Although saying that I've been very happy with the Sky Unlimited package so far (averaging 8Mb out of the possible 20Mb down, getting about 0.45Mb up which isn't too bad and a stable 37ms ping).
