Hi,

Brilliant forum here! Consistently comes up in Google with good posts!

I’ve just got a new rig with an i7 920 and I was wondering what the safe overclocking “core” temperatures are?

Well "safe" is different from "normal".

A safe idle would probably be 40c.

A safe load is 80c at most.

I think it is more opinion than anything, although obviously if your hitting high 90s it is way too hot.

What temps are you getting at the moment? A screenshot would help a lot.

If you are reaching those 80s or so on load you may want to consider extra cooling such as a H-50 or full system water cooling, or even just a new case and some extra fans.

I've noticed that the temperature within Gigabytes EasyTune6 reports a temperature of 49C, but if I use HWMonitor I can see the core temps are actually 62C/ 60C/ 61C/ 57C.

Does any know why there is a difference?

I guess sticking with HWMonitors temps would be better then EasyTune...

I don't understand th difference, but those temps are fine (if they are loads temps at least)

Do you get similar temps to these when running Prime95?

IDLE 40oC area but as mentioned my i7 comes unstable at around 85oC. I am to keep it at low 80's as my MAX safe temp.

That difference is weird and freaked me out at first. It must monitor some other temperature on the CPU.
Yeah they are load temps been running prime95 for about 8 hours on blend now, looks pretty stable @ 3.2GHz

62c is great for OCed with Prime95.

I think you coud do a lot better than 3.2GHz though mate. Some people have achieved 4.00GHz.

I can reach 3.20GHz with my Phenom II 810...

Edit: It seems the i7 gives out a lot more heat than my Phenom, I run at less than 50c constantly on load. I have an Antec 300 build also and stock fan (no watercooling at all)

I have my i7 920 running at 3.8 with a fenrir cooler. Idle temp is 41 degrees and under load while playing games it never go's beyond 63, im assuming this is safe.

I’ll give it a further push after some more stressing. I need it to be stable for 24+ as I’m lazy and don’t turn my machine off unless I have to :D

I've seen i7's Priming away happily well into the mid-90's, obviously the more you overclock the more likely it is to crash at a lower temperature.

You should aim for 80-85C imo just to give you a bit of a buffer zone from the 100C throttle point, but it doesn't really matter as long as it's stable.

Got my core i7 d0 at 4ghz and in prime it never goes above 72 but I have a 4870x2 in the loop also on a quad rad. Gaming never takes it above 60.
