Large screen 720p PC gaming question....

Out of interest does anyone use a 36 or even a 42" 720p plasma for gaming? I've been using a Samsung at 1024 x 768 (I also have a 1080p downstairs but its a right PITA to drag the PC down there to play at higher res) and I'll be truthful..

Playing Silent Hunter 4 at 1024 x 768 is just awesome looking.... Makes me think. I'm playing games at a much lower res then what my graphics card can handle (8800GTX 512MB) yet the graphics from my PC at 1024 x 768 is much clear and crisper then say Xbox 360...

Just asking if anyone else thinks 1024 x 768 on a 720p TV is a good compromise.. Silent Hunter 4 max out settings at 1024 x 768 is smooth, I’m trying Batman Arkham tonight…
 
I find lower res fine if you sat quite far back if your sat close up its very ugly compaired with high res.

It will look good comapired with any console because of the aa and af settings.

When ever i go to my friends house i find his ps3 graphics look better then my ps3 jsut cause of the fact i using a pc monitor for my ps3 and i sit quite close, where at his house its on a bigger tv and sit further back so you notice the imperfections much less.
 
Yeah and it was awful, just replaced it with a 1080p and it's so much better its beyond words.

Of course this is assuming you sit at it almost like a monitor :p
 
Guess as I've only got a 17" TFT that can handle 1280 x 1024 max (yep I never did upgrade it) and trying a 720p screen that's only one step down, I've never really played games to any extent on PC past 1280 x 1024 so I guess 1024 x 768 to me isn't that much from what my TFT can handle..

Now, on the 1080p its another story but I hardly get to use it as a PC gaming panel as its a right pain to hook up my PC to it, and not only that is the main TV and its in use as the gf watches it whilst I play games....

Oh well, its better then nothing and I sit a few feet away and I think it looked ok, least I get top end FPS even if I'm getting lower end res...!! lol
 
I use my 1080p tv as my monitor as well.

I've found that if you do a direct comparisson between 1080p and 720p, there is a noticable difference. But if you play at 720p for a while, your eyes adjust and you can't remember the difference. It's great for demanding games as you can get the same (almost) image quality and better perfomance.

I sit around 2-3 meters away from the tv btw.

I would never use my PS3 or Xbox sitting close to the tv, they do look terrible up close, but from distance, some games look amazing
 
unless you're sitting far away from your screen 720cat 36/42" would look horrific up close when used as a monitor.

For general desktop usage it does look pretty poor.... Web browsing and the such on a 720p plasma at 1024 x 768 is not good..!! However for games its totally awsome I felt...

I can not tell the difference from 1280 x 1024 on my 17" TFT to 1024 x 768 on a 42" 720p....Silent hunter 4 looks stunning will all settings max'd out.....

If you sit a good few feet away it can look totally stunning..!! Ok its a lower res, but really as long as the game looks good - does it really matter?
 
Been gaming on a 40" Samsung HDTV for about 3 years now via HDMI to PC. Its way beyond awesome as long as the games you play support wireless gamepads ;) (otherwise you need to use xpadder or some other util to map kb+mouse to gamepad or use a mat for mouse & have the keyboard on your lap).

This is what the next gen consoles will look like but its been here already for 3-3.5 years on PC :D
 
I use a 46" Samsung LEDTV as my monitor for gaming, although I do use it at 1080 as other people have said. I never realised what I was missing before tbh.
 
I've just recently been playing some games on my 42" panny plasma, in particular Quake Live. And it's friggin amazing!. Better than any LCD i've seen, and about 99% close to my FDW900 24" sony CRT. There's no ghosting. No smearing , no tearing, great bright colours, large easy to see screen. I'd totally recommend it. So much that I'm getting rid of my CRT now and it's truly been surpassed. My plasma can handle anything that I used to use that for, except high res destop usage, but These days LCDs surpass the CRT for that now anyway.

I say 99% as in a week or 2 of gaming I *think* i've noticed *twice* a 'green tinge for a fraction in very particular cirstances, but have been unable to recreate it.

I did test this screen when I got it and rated it fairly decent, but it did leave trails. Now it seems to have bedded in (had it about 18 months now) and the picture is stunning.

I use my 42" LCD 1920x1080 TV for games, and have done for the last 18 months.

Everything looks absolutely amazing on it, and my Q6600/8800GT doesn't really struggle much (at that res/distance, I don't really need AA/AF, so they're typically off or very low)
