So what have you lot got against golfs?!

Well, you think wrong. It's perfectly valid as one of a series of measures of build quality. How can road noise levels not be a reflection of build quality?

Prestige car makers often quote low cabin noise in their marketing spiel and reviews of these cars often refer to it, so it's clearly an important consideration for many people. How do you create low cabin noise? With lots of good quality sound dampening materials, double seals on the windows, lining the bonnet and arches etc. Of course sound dampening is a valid factor in considering the quality of a car's construction. You saying otherwise seriously makes me think you're arguing just for the sake of arguing.

Who would have thunk it!

One of the things i loved about the Mk4 and B5.5 Passat interior is on a cold morning if you touch trim items all of them are cold, do the same thing on a Focus and they won't be, this is because the Focus uses cheap plastic for its trim and VW have used metal.

Metal = more expensive and heavy, plus i cannot see one spot on my MK1.5 focus that has cheap plastic, everything about the interior is spot on, infact the MK1.5 dash is probably the best ive seen.

I have nothing against golfs at all, and i actually think the MK2 focus is the most boring looking car, followed behind the golf MK 5 & 6.

But in terms of fun, driving, running costs and overall satisfaction you cannot beat the focus. Look at the focus ST which you can pick up new for 19k or a golf GTi which start at 24k. I think ill take the focus and bag myself 5 grand.

Thanks

So you compare the bottom end of what is possible in terms of Focus ST pricing, with the RRP for a Golf GTi and call it a useful comparison? Besides, you can't seem to spec automatic on the Focus and I personally am never buying an every day car without an auto gearbox again!

Indeed, the dash design and cabin plastics are the weak link in the Mk1 and Mk1.5 Focus package, apart from that its still a very good car.

It may be plastic, but it looks nothing like plastic compared to the dimpled plastic you get in a golf. The door panels are not plastic either on a focus bar the handle and cubby holders.

This argument will never be settled tho. VAG love there VAG's depsite most be overpriced and not very reliable. And Ford lovers will love there Ford's depiste the normal looks.

Now i'm really confused, what is your Focus interior made out of?

Every single Mk1 and Mk1.5 Focus i've been in has an interior which is made of 100% plastic.

doesn't look or feel like plastic to me, as when i press on it, it indents then springs back out slowly, very much like foam does, so thats some kind of funky plastic going on there.

modern polycarbonates are far from the old crappy plastic you got in 80s dashboards

but its still essentially plastic. :)

Even porsche, lamborghini, bently and ferrari etc.. have plastic dashboards, they just trim over the top in alcantara or leather.

Its just a padded foam dash with a plastic top layer, nothing amazing about that, the Golfs dash and door tops are exactly the same.

I wonder why Fox doesnt reply to your posts anymore. :p EDIT - Turns out he does!

Wind noise etc is part of the DESIGN, not build quality. Whether you think they are 'quality' materials or not is PERCEPTION. Marketeers and journalists refer to it as build quality because thats what the common public believe what the definition of quality is.

Now if you came along and said that there's wind noise due to panel gaps etc, that occur in some of the cars and not others. THAT is a failure in build quality.

Love it. ;)

How can they be? Surely road noise depends on a cars design breif not its build quality?

Take two cars in the same range - the Audi A4 2.0 TDI SE and the Audi A4 2.0 TDI S-Line.

One of these cars is going to have a noticeable amount more road noise than the other. Is it because it is of lesser quality? No, the quality is identical.

Even fitting different tyres from standard will increase or decrease road noise, doesn't mean the glovebox is going to fall off. :D
