There was a thread on this a while back, but I can't find it!

Anyway, long story short, me and my friends have been talking about going the syrup route rather than just buying coke. My parents have a Makro card, so that's an optio, though the nearest one is 35 miles away, so its not an easy trip, and I'm not sure what alternatives there would be.

I know you need a sodastream unit, and the cola from somewhere. Does anyone have the thread all this was talked about in?
 
the syrup costs the same as 2 litre bottles

£26 = 10 litres of syrup = 60 litres of coke
£1 = 2 litres of coke

so you would make a £4 saving every 60 litres, but your excluding gas and electricity costs or whatever it is these machines run on.

so if your doing it to save money, dont bother, if your doing it because you think the syrup tastes better, its a lot of hassle for the taste
 
The taste is a lot worse than standard bottled Coke, really not worth the hassle unless you want to buy in bulk and have a tap in your kitchen?
 
Ewwww. Seriously I work in a bar and none of the bar staff drink from the pumps as we get to see the Syrup and it's just icky stuff. It also tastes like ass. I'm not saying canned/bottle stuff is any better. But I think once you see it for what it really is you are put off.

I've also heard this from almost everyone I know who works or has worked in a bar. They won't drink coke on tap because the syrup is horrible stuff and clogs up the pipes.

Yeah, but it's mixed in the pipes isn't it? And all the crap that gets clogged in there carries through to the drink. It's probably no better than when it's mixed by Coke themselves, but I suppose if you've seen it, you wouldn't want to drink it.

I can't back it up though, it's only what other people have told me.

Not from what i've seen, maybe in some places. If you look at the dispensers in places like Cineworld for example you can see the clear soda and the syrup coming out seperately. Same with Subway and McDonalds etc. :)

Yeah but the syrup still has to go through a pipe full of old clogged up syrup :confused:

This is true. That's how the hand pumps which dispense multiple drinks work. Anyway it's still sickly stuff. It's like tar. Also I have yet to work in a bar where the stuff doesn't leak all over the place in the cellar.
 
When I last worked in a bar that used coke taps, the syrup wasn't mixed with the soda until it came out of the tap. There were about 10 small pipes in there, one of them was the coke syrup and the remaining 9 were just soda water.
 
I cant see why someone would actually shoose to deink the syrup rather than the regular stuff, but each to their own i suppose.
 
the only reason why bars/restaurants use syrup is because it takes up less space.

for example in my restaurant there are at least 12 x 10 litre syrups lying in the cellar at any point in time. imagine trying to store the actual product 12 x 60 litres.

as for people saying that syrups gets clogged in the lines, this is a load of crap. the syrup is constantly moving through the lines. unless you go somewhere which only gets 1 customer a week, i have never seen any of my syrup lines get clogged or dirty in over 5 years. the only problem that we do get is that sometimes the mix ratio goes out of balance, this just happens you cant stop it and can happen at any time. so we normally call out the engineer to come and check it out if we think any 1 of the products tastes too weak or too strong.

as for saying staff never drink the syrup stuff when they find out what it really is, that is also a load of crap, ive seen many staff drink from drink dispensers, including when i go out for a meal at nando's, etc.

Aye, in the bars i've worked in many moons ago, you use to be able to get syrup to come out on its own, was great for making extra strong Cola, tango etc or a combination of drinks.
Pure syrup is also great for hangovers! though the comedown is somewhat bad :cool:

this works with coke on our gun but none of the others, you have to lightly press the coke button and syrup will dribble out, if you press it in fully then syrup plus soda water comes out, it used to work with irn bru too but it doesnt anymore.
