So what have you lot got against golfs?!

Some people are saying it's overpriced, others think that if you have the money for the Golf then it's worth it. It all just comes down to points of view.

Telegraph review:

"Nothing else comes close (sorry French people and Japanese rivals) and you could end up on a beach rolling a stone between your hands saying, "Focus or Golf, Golf or Focus" until the stone wore out. Sure, the Golf looks pretty much the same as before, but that's what its buyers like; the cabin makes you wonder why people buy Audis and it's very good to drive."

Thats some committed fanboyism, right there

no it's not, it's a statement given by me from figures provided

there's too many variations for the inside of a car to be a true measure of build quality tbf, ie tyre widths and brands.

the bottom line imo is that the golf is an extremely well put togethor bit of kit at a slighlty higher price than it's competitors but this is worth paying and is reflected in resale value.

it comes down to personal taste and individual budget. a focus is a fosters a golf is a stella. both will get you drunk but one costs a little more and is much more enjoyable :)

Hahaha what an epic thread I just read. I can't beleive how defensive some people get - it must suck to be so insecure about a purchase that literally hours are wasted trying to justify it to random people on the internet. :D

(Not talking about one person in particular, just a general theme in this thread)

I agree, I wish that I didnt spend all my time justifying my £5k spend on a 15 year old car, oh wait.........I don't as I am happy with my purchase and feel no need to ram it down everyones throat 24/7.

This level of fanboyism just screams of "I need to defend my purchase at all costs all the time"

You spent 16k+ on a new 1.4 Golf, most people think you are a fool for doing so, get over it, it is becoming wearisome.

Golf GTI (MkVI) - 66, 70, 73
Focus RS (MkII) - 67, 73, 76
A3 TDI - 70, 74, 76
Golf GTD - 70, 74, 78
Mazda 3 2.2 MZR CD - 67, 71, 75
Leon 2.0 TDI FR - 70, 74, 77
Megane TCE 130 - 66, 71, 74
Astra Sport 1.6 - 66, 70, 73
Focus Titanium 2.0 - 67, 70, 73
Golf 1.4 TSi - 67, 69, 72

Make of that what you will.

Stiffer suspension = more road noise?

Looks like a Leon diesel and Mazda 3 diesel has a quieter cabin than a Golf diesel.

MUST BE THE BETTER BUILD QUALITY EH ROBBIE?

And don't forget that Warranty Direct shows it to actually have really average levels of reliability (only slightly better than a Focus).
Maybe if they spent less time on improving interior plastics, they'd actually have the opportunity to make it as realiable as a Japanese car.

According to this thread my passat has better build quality than a bentley, because i have around 400 sq/ft of maxmat pro sound deadening.

If I buy a brand new golf and have it for 3 years, at the end of the 3rd year will it have depreciated less than a brand new focus after 3 years?

Probably - but thats not taking into account discounts.

It also just makes the faster depreciating car a better buy used, swings and roundabouts

This was covered in another thread, your Golf will be worth more, but you'll have paid more to start with. Someone worked it out that they were practically the same.

Ok so if you sold both after 3 years you would still come out with the same cash. So say the you pay 2k more for the golf you walk away with that 2k after 3 years.

I didnt realise they did that!

Hope the marketing manager got the boot shortly after that.... no wonder every Golf I ever see has GTi on the back of it, and I'm forced to overtake it in a very short space of time....

yep they made a 2l 8v mk4 gti that was slower than the original mk1!!!! the mk4 in most guises is sloppy and too soft even the r32 is a good rather than great car (its a fantastic base to modify from though ;) ) it understeers too much although the suspension is a lot more controlled than the lower models the vr6 egine is an absolute gem though

I can't find the post but because you can get great discounts on the Focus you can end up paying something like £3k-£4k less for the same sort of car. The Focus will depreciate more and thus lose more value as a percentage of its sticker price and this is what fan boys go on, but at the end of the day after 3 years you are likely to lose the same amount of money on both cars.
