An iPad Thread.

Bloody hell Steve...don't mean to be rude at all but these comments make me think that your trying to justify not buying an iPad but actually really want one.

If you haven't even picked up an iPhone or iPod Touch before...go to an Apple Store - have a play about and see what you think. And if you have and your not even vaguely interested, why not leave this thread alone.

The thing is I can think of many reasons why I WOULD NOT want a non-Apple iPad kind of device...especially if it has Windows on it.

EDIT: As for multi task. I would like a 'dumbed down' version of Exposé or spaces. No real need for the iPad to have something like Mail and iWork but sort of have it save an image of what your doing in Mail and then let you open a new app and be able to switch between them. I am not expecting something as powerful on my Macbook. But if there is one thing Apple are good at it is optimizing. Using the Apps on my iPhone is a breeze and a lot easier to use then something as dreaded as Windows Mobile *stating now that I haven't tried but seen the videos*. :)

Has anyone heard of anything about Aperture coming to the iPad? :D

No, you're not wrong at all - I think it's a cracking device and I'd be all over it like a cheap perfume if it was reasonably priced. As a gadget it's exactly what I'd look for to be sitting on my coffee table for random sofa browsing but I can't justify it at £400+. As I've repeatedly said, if I'm going to dish out £400 - £800 on a device it had better be doing something pretty convincing and the iPad doesn't sell me at that especially when you look at what you can get in a laptop form factor at the same price.

I have an iPod touch and I think it's the dogs furries. Because it cost what I expected and it does everything I expected for the price plus a little more.

Ah now - Winmo is a whole other kettle of fish - not having used Windows 7 Mobile (or whatever it's called) I can't comment on that, but the older Winmo is a dog! I have chosen Android as my mobile OS but it has a way to go - however when combined with HTCs Sense UI it's a cracking gadget that holds some serious promise.

Look I'm not an Apple fan boi, and I'm not against them. I think Mr Jobs is a bloody clever man that drives some serious innovation. Apple churns out some very desireably bits of kit and I would be right in line to get OSX if I could install it on my home PC but they also place a premium on their kit that I personally can't justify. As a consumer I look for the best bang for my buck and do my best to educate myself toward that end. The iPad, to me, seems like it is the domain of those with too much money and either too little sense or a penchant for early adoption.

Im not sure which im going to go for yet.

I think ill wait intill the iPad gets hacked and Cydia apps like multi-tasking + others can be used on it.

If not, or if it takes to long ill either go for a win7 device or android depending on what it's like

Multi tasking...is this only real leg "window shoppers" have to stand on?

Although my I haven't jailbroken my iPhone and I use it a hell of a lot as my main all in one device sort of speak, I haven't found this a problem. Being able to use Push means things like email etc is sent straight to the device.

And Steve, have actually had a good sit down with a Mac or what?

Yep - love them - I think they're excellent machines - never said any different. My Fiance loves hers to bits, of course she got it through work as her work machine. It's always been about the cash you have to dish out for the privalige to use them that's bugged me.

I have recently found the Gigabyte M528 selling for £300. It comes with Linux pre-installed, but it is compatible with windows too. It has 3G which I don't have to say how great that is for that price (it also has wifi). So that means for £20 (4x£5 top-ups) on PAYG with 3 you can have a year's supply of internet (150mb/month - pretty much enough for text-only data). Oh yeah, it also has built in GPS!
I would swap it with my current netbook (sony tr1mp) However I could not stand another portable computer with a full os and would happily pay £100-200 extra for an ipad to have: Instant on (and general better responsiveness), better UI for every app for use on the move/when you want something a bit more relaxed than a mouse and keyboard, like the reason why some people prefer a console controller to a mouse and keyboard for playing games (POTENTIALLY) /BOLD FOR SOME REASON, longer battery life and also a nice bonus of running more advanced games at very playable speed (minesweeper just doesn't cut-it anymore).
And finally, I find typing on my iPod touch almost as good as on my Toshiba G910 so I wouldn't miss a keyboard on the ipad (not that you can't have one).

i still dont see the point of it at all. an ipod/iphone but without the mobility. i honestly cant ever imagine using it for music. . its essentially costing $500+ just for a device to browse the web ?

all you people saying you will use it on the sofa why not just plug something like an acer revo , mac mini into your tv. or even better just use your phone...

Because that isn't a particularly pleasant or relaxing way to browse, also you're stuffed if there's something on telly and you'd need to wait for the thing to boot.

Have you used a decent touch screen device? A slightly bigger iPhone sounds great, I was disappointed with what happened to Crunchpad but the iPad looks much better.

As for the cost most people have probably already spent more than $500 on something that just displays a video signal or just keeps their food cold or just....

And I've just spent £600 on a telly and £4000 on a car and £400000 on a house and £10000000 on getting a ride to the ISS... what's your point? Are you suggesting that if I were buy a pair of scissors for £300 it would be fine because I've just spent £4000 on a car? That makes no sense.

I have a Mac Mini plugged in to a 60" plasma, and you still have to be sat at a decent distance (< 12ft) to see the text on a webpage, in Safari. It's an excellent machine, but having a large iPod touch would make browsing a lot simpler. You wouldn't be tied to a single screen for starters and then there's portability.

Personally, I couldn't give a stuff about it having/not having a camera as I want to integrate it in to my new multi-room audio / video install. In fact.. there is a huge thread about this over at AVForums (using the iPad as a controller).

It's like the iPhone when it debuted... Apple attracted the hardcore, while many sat and objected. Apple lowered the price, added features and now everyone is all over it.

My advice to anyone: if you can think of a reason why you don't want it, don't get it. Get revision 2.

*sigh* another tablet overpriced for what it is capable of. It's people like you that feed the market for overpriced gadgets. You don't mind paying heaps for it because... a) you can't get it for cheaper so you'll just dish out b) you buy into the marketing spiel that you're getting more than just a glorified mobile phone because it's pretty and c) you somehow have convinced yourself that it is fulfilling a need that you didn't know you had before they told you that you had it. Such a consumer.

A) how is sub 400 over priced? Most tablets are £600+ with a stupid full OS you can't use and on top of that makes it harder to use. It also has a premium as it is apple. The msi android will have a few more features like USB and should be £300 both are pretty much bargains.
B) I'm not buying into marketing a glorified phone/mp3 player is what I want. Something that just works and works well for the few tasks it is designed for.
C) I've wanted a tablet for years but not for £700 and ideally not with a full OS.

TBH there aren't really any slate style tablets out (there are one or two but none really), there are loads of ones with keyboards which are £600 but they are proper laptops with touch screens so very different.

There are quite a few previewed this year however (most before the iPad) as we know, that msi one and the Norton adam ink, both of which will be around a similar price to the iPad but arguably better (inclusion of flash and hybrid e-ink style screens). You then have the full OS versions like the Hanvon and others which will run proper low voltage laptop chips and have significant memory and storage, running full OSs which look like they will come in at around £600-£900 (which i'm far more interested in, although the adam ink with it's hybrid screen would be a good e-reader and general browser admittedly). So yeah the iPad is slightly more than its actual competition but also in the same range as the full tablets/slates.

Let's not forget the iPhone cost $499 when it was released, so in comparison this is a bargain :p

$499 with a phone, wireless and full mobile data capability - in comparison you're getting a bigger screen and less capability for significantly more ping...

There were no applications when it debuted at $499, so I'd argue you are getting a better deal with an iPad.

Of course that makes no sense, and of course that wasn't my point.

My point was that $500 isn't a lot of money for a computer and it isn't a lot of money for a household appliance. It was a rebuttal of:

domain of those with too much money .... too little sense

The delay will be a blessing for the UK cos' we will get the US reviews which will point the way in terms of issues / shortcomings. At the moment, we only know what Steve has told us (plus a few journos for 30 mins).... I want to see a decent (critical) review.

Hmm looks like Im getting one for my parents - thinking it would be a great device for the technically challenged for surfing the web, having some music on it and using the apps I have on my iTunes account...

Just wondering if others are buying for the same reason - a Touch would be fine but with their age something larger with a bigger screen size makes far more sense...

ps3ud0
