Hey guys... was thinking about getting a HP Pavilion dv7-3020e for about £1050 but because it only has 4gb RAM I'm kind of holding back... It seems to have 2x2gb ram rather than 1x4 so I can't just wait and slap in an upgrade...

I think the 8gb models with Core i7 (4x1.6ghz) CPUs cost around 1.2 > 1.3k

Anyone got any idea... perhaps a prediction when the 8gb models will seem cheaper and more common? The new line of graphic cards (dx11) are being released by Nvidia in about a month or so and perhaps the introduction of these will see a slash in price for the lesser cards.

Comments?

Have a look at the Dell Studio 15, specifically the version that starts at £698.99 with a Core i7-720QM and 4GB RAM. Making it 8GB adds £300 to the price. It comes with a DX11 GPU (HD5470) and upgrading to a 1920 x 1080 display is only an extra £70. It seems to be much better value for money than the HP.

Bought it today btw, without 8gb ram though. 4gb is plenty, added 1080p screen + backlit keyboard. It wont be there for long, they added it today and they change their deals on Thursday. Dunno why they changed it today though. Last wednesday they added an i7 model which was also gone by thursday morning due to demand (so i was told by a sales rep).

hmmm yeah fine deals. I'm using a Dell Vostro 1700 (17" 3gb 2.4ghz Core2Duo) as we speak but the screen has gone on it, and the audio jack is knackered.

Do a lot of stationary stuff so the screensize would need to be 17+

I'll check out the stuff that everyone has been talking about... but kind of wanted to move aawy from Dell after this crap with the audio jack causing the whole laptop to freeze etc :P Will have a look anyway! cheers

Wanted 8gb... you know going from 2cores to 4, and going from 3gb to 8gb

Would seem like a cop out toget a nice processor and not much ram, especially when I do a lot of photoshopping + have loads of stuff up at once

Correct me if im wrong, but i dont think the i5-530 is quad core? Only the i7-720QM is actually quad core.. the rest are dual i think, but have 2 threads. It's misleading..

Btw waht do you mean the screen has gone? it doesnt work? i got the screenn upgrade on my laptop, hope it dnt fail on me or i'll b ****ed

Indeed, the quad-core mobile Core i7s are the 720QM, 820QM and the 920XM. The 720QM is the only one that makes sense in terms of value for money, in my opinion.

At the moment the dell i7 quad core laptops throttle. Most people recommend i5-540m 32nm processor and 5650 GPU as best option.

Excuse my ignorance, or lack of knowledge, but what do you mean exactly when you say they "throttle". Correct me otherwise, but I thought the whole idea was for it to throttle from 1.6ghz to 2.8ghz, or "boost". I'm probably getting mixed up with some other terminology...

The other throttle term I know is when something becomes capped, like when an ISP throttles someones internet connection. If this is what you mean, what happens on the i7? I got one yesterday ordered so now you're making me worried :p

Thanks :)

Supafly means they overheat, not enough air (throttle) and apparently from another thread here somewhere (sorry can't remember where) quite a few versions have been pulled.

Well they do run hot. But it's a power issue, not enough watts for the processor and/or gpu. So what happens is the cpu and gpu is slowed down to work within the bios restriction of 90 watt limit. Do a google search for 'dell 1747 throttling'. It happens on dell studio/xps i7 based laptops.

Currently the i5/ati 5650 is the best none throttling combination, at least for dell laptops.

Ah crap. Thanks for explaining that, now im annoyed at Dell. Why sell something that doesnt even work right, arrgh. I got the i7-720QM & 5470 card.. i dont know if mines a 1558 or 1557, i think its 1558, I ordered it yday and thats what they're offering nowdays?

Anyone had any experience with the i7-720QM + 5470 combination?

Does it only happen when the laptop is not plugged in or both when its in and out??

I just bought an Acer Aspire 5942G (8gig ram, i7-720QM, HD5650, 640gig HDD) for the equivilant of about 1200quid. Still installing stuff so can't tell how good it is performance wise. The build quality seems better than I thought an Acer would be. Sound quality is pretty decent too.

It happens when plugged into the mains.

Battery can supply more than 90w so it does not throttle.

There is a way around the problem, purchase a 130 watt psu and use 'throttlestop' software.

When you say 130 watt pwu, do you simply mean a 130w charger with the square thing saying 130watts, or do you actually mean the PSU inside the laptop... if so, isn't this difficult?

Thanks!
