Afternoon chaps,

New work car time at long last in a couple of months, been giving the list which basically contains every top-end supermini and low-end Focus type car.

The one that caught my eye was the Seat Ibiza SC 1.6 TDI CR 105PS Sport. I don't think I have seen one of these on the road but love the look of them from pictures I have seen. They use VW engines don't they?

Up to much? Or would I be better off going for a bottom end Focus / new Astra / Golf diesel variant?

I drove this diesel a couple of months ago while my car was getting serviced, the power band is like this. 1k rpm nothing 2rpm nothing 2.5k wow power 3k power 3.5k no power, change, 2k no power and so on.

Why buy a diesel super mini. Get the petrol and if you do loads of miles get something bigger and more refined.

Looks wise it's a great little car.

I seen a 10 plate one at uni.

They look stunning in some angles and then ordinary in others. Its very strange but it does have realy nice lines.

This wont help but i have a VW built SEAT ibiza from 2001 and its been faultless. The VAG group is solid imo you cant go wrong with VW, SEAT,Skoda.

Cant realy give you any advice on them sorry

It's a company car, I don't have a choice of engines. There is not 1 car on the list that is a petrol. :p

I'm not expecting much performance wise, as long as it's comfortable on the motorway. I have my own car for performance. :D

Well i thought it was fine to drive (engine aside) I'm sure it'll be fine. I don't know what else is on your list though.

What is on your list mate?

Ford Fiesta Titanium 1.6 TDCi
Ford Focus Zetec 1.6 TDCi
Seat Ibiza SC 1.6 TDI CR 105PS Sport
Vauxhall Corsa SXi 1.7 CTDi
Vauxhall Astra (new model) SE 1.7 CTDi
VW Polo SE 1.6 TDi
VW Golf S 1.6 TDi

Peugeot, Citroen, Renault, Toyota and Mazda equivalents as well. Not very exciting. :D

No do not get the focus, its the outgoing model and will soon lose a lot of value and start to look dated.

I would pick the new astra, you just have to read the reviews - very very good car.

Shall look into the Astra, didn't realise it was so well received, was put off by its older brother and didn't expect much.

I'd chose the Ibiza.

Stands out from the Focus (a little) and who wants a 1.6D Focus. no thanks.

Ibiza is certainly more stylish, but is more of a city car.

OP, what kind of mileage do you do?

Astra by a country metre:p, the car is on a par with the current focus in terms of ride and handling and its a nicer place to sit.

Where does the SE sit in the model range?

Ibiza is a good fun city car, but it wont be much fun on the motorway if that s why you get a CC.

Around 20,000 miles.

The S is the only model below the SE in the Astra range I think. Seems to have the usual kit though. The 1.6 in the Ibiza should be ok for motorway driving no? Or are we talking in terms of space / comfort etc. I suspect the latter and would probably agree.

Oh flipping hec, DO NOT do 20,000 miles in what is basically a city car, you want a big, quiet, smooth car with a decent size engine. An ibiza may have the engine but it will not be smooth or quiet. Astra or the golf is the way to go and I would go for the astra.

Have a look at this review: http://www.topgear.com/uk/vauxhall/astra/road-test/1.7-cdti-se

Might help you make up your mind.

From that list I'd take the Golf. Seat as the VAG groups "sporty" brand will likely be hard riding and noisy on the motorway compared to the bigger Golf. I've not been in the Sport, but the FR models of every Seat I've been in break my spine if you go near a pothole.

No substitute for trying it yourself mind.
