Upgrade from 280gtx to a 5870 worth it?

Fact: a 5870 beats a gtx285 and is within 5% of a gtx295

Fact: A 5850 will overclock easily to a speed which beats a 5870 at stock so hence is faster than a gtx295.

Fact: At the same overclocked speed a 5870 is only 5 - 6% faster than a 5850 at best. Some games it's even.

Fact: Since a 5870 or overclocked 5850 is on par with a gtx295 which is really a hybrid 2 x gtx275 then it will be on par to two gtx280 in SLI.

So if you think the performance from gtx280 in SLI isn't worth the upgrade cost then don't bother. If the numbers stack up then BUY. BUY, BUY.

Yeah valid points in all.

For people like me who have 2 screens or more and have a 260/280 at the moment, SLI is kinda pointless..

So an upgrade to the ATI 5xxx series would be a nice step up.

But I'm weird....

so if i bought a 5870 i would be only getting 5% more performance plus of course dx11?

more than 5% maybe 15 to 20%

you have to ask yourself if that 20% is worth a £100 (5850) or £150+ (5870) to you, if yes, then upgrade by all means.

Im considering a similair sort of upgrade. My gtx 280 died, got a gtx 275 as a replacement, this died too. Im now waiting on another 275 arriving, currently running an 8800gt, considering selling this along with the replacement 275 to fund a 5870.

If 2 Nvidia cards failed on me like that, then I would try an ATI card.

look at OP and title;)

Sorry. I didn;t realise you were the op :o

No a 5850 overclocked or a 5870 would give you the same gain as a 2nd gtx280 so around 60%. The 5870 would only be 5% more than 5850 at the same clocks.

Just compare your gtx280 to a gtx295 to getb a rough idea of the improvement.

ouch setter that's terrible luck :/ Makes me paranoid about buying 2nd hand and not being under warranty

Certainly is, i even considered that my psu might have been at fault, (thermaltake toughpower 750w), got a friend whos an electronics engineer to test it with a multimetre, he reported that it was fine. I tried an old 8800gts 640 and it worked fine, as does my current 8800gt i got on MM. Gotta ring the etailer responsible for rma tomorrow again, couldnt get through to them last week at all.

Yep, bit of a downgrade, initially they were gonna offer me £123.11 as a refund, had to keep haggling before they decided to give me the 275 gtx. When i get the next card in i dont intend to keep it too long.

my GTX 285 performs roughly same as a 5850, but hte 5850 is better at lower fps ( as in on crysis my gtx285 at 28fps you can tell its lagging, with the 5850 its still prety smooth)

i would either sell now and wait for a couple of months or stay as you are for another year unless £550 for a 5970 is not a problem for you :P lol
