I'm looking to buy my first car at the age of 25. I'm looking at a Ford Focus 1.6, however I've only ever been a named driver on another insurance so have 0 NCB.

Other factors which I think are working against me are,

Manchester Address
Street Parking
Parked in car park during work hours

For this I'm being quoted £1k, I've never had an accident or conviction. It seems a bit high for me?

on a side note id go for the slightly larger engined focus insurance aint much different. The economy will be about the same aswel if not little better, as the 1.6 is a little down on power for the shell.

Well no, not really.

The 1.8 is 2 insurance groups higher and about 15% less efficient on fuel. The difference for the 2.0 is about the same again - 2 insurance groups over the 1.8 and about 10% more fuel.

The 1.8 only gives you another 15bhp and the performance figures are almost the same as the 1.6 - 10s compared to 9.9s to 60!

The 2.0 at least gives you a decent performance hike (sub 9s to 60) but whether you want the performance or not is up to you. The 1.6 isnt the weak link in the engine lineup, the 1.4 and 1.8 are

Who was the quote with? Liverpool Victoria are pretty good with new/low NCB drivers. Adrian Flux also?

Honestly, there's no point reccomending specific insurers as cheap - they're different for everyone. When I was young, directline were cheapest for all my friends, even ones living just around the corner. But for me, they were one of the most expensive! The OP needs to do his own legwork, the only useful information you can give him is names of specialists that wont appear on comparison sites

Not to throw all of Manchester into the same pot, but my quotes were a chunk more expensive when I used to live ooop North despite me being in a smart area.

Typically playing around with your annual mileage, occupation & adding a 'clean' adult or two helps drive the quote down & dont just use confooodoododoled.com for your quotes!

try a quote with the company that you were a named driver with, might be able to get a named driver discount :)

Having owned both cars the 1.8 was definately better and the mpg it was about the same. As i found that with the smaller engine i was having to give it a little extra to get going etc. As for insurance look at the groups for a zetec model for example both are group 6 for the early ones. I will agree that the 1.4 is a seriously weak link hence why they stopped production.

It won't harm it either. The only thing that harms my insurance is my accidents and lack of NCB, being a student if anything, lowers it.

Utter rubbish. I used to pay £2100 for my insurance when I was a student, then when I got a job, I rung them and it LOWERED MY PREMIUM BY £400!

And I paid £800 on my last car, because it was a grp 16 car and I had 0NCB and 2 accidents. If I were to insure it again it'd be £500 with 1NCB and 1 accident removed (due to being over 5 years ago). I was then and still am a student. At the time I entered the job I was in and it made NO difference.

So I think you'll find it doesn't always have anywhere near as much influence as you think. The fact your insurance was 2100 is just laughable though.

Occupation is very important for insurance. And can change the quote by several hundred pounds. In get some quotes as a lawyer then a student.

its the age old caveat with insurance advice

it totally depends on your insurer. Since he hasnt posted what insurer the quote was with, i thought it best to mention as some insurers will penalise you for it as others have already found.

Thats nothing mate. On my Yaris it cost me £750 and Im 22, 4yrs Driving and 3 NCBs. It just down to where you live because I did a quote in a better area and it dropped down to £450.

I passed my test when I was 25 and my first insurance on a 1.6 53 plate Ford Focus was £1130. SW4 postcode :(

Manchester (central enough to be classed as manchester) is terrible and according to several insurers I've had quotes through has taken a change for the worse in the past couple of years. Just shop around, without giving all your details no one can replicate your quote.
