Bigger box!
Hi,

This was one of the titles that made me want to get a PS3, this and GTA4. I got GTA with it, and never really played it much despite LOVING all previous incarnations.
I kinda let MGS pass me by.

So yesterday, at a loose end and unable to find anyone letting FF go early I went and bought MGS4.
It's just too odd!!

I enjoyed MGS1, and LOVED 2. In fact, I completed 2 in just about 1 sitting overnight I was that impressed with it.

Missed 3 and figured I'd love 4. I've read the reviews, they're all great, and so I sat down all ready to get lost in a marathon of gaming.....

Not to be :( It's just not as comfortable to play as I remember 2 being.
I'm a bit OCD when it comes to stealth games. If you're able to do a level without shooting or causing alerts then that's how I want to do it, but it doesn't really seem like the game wants you too. Everything's a bit messy.
For example, in previous games, you had a nice radar screen, showing you exactly where people were, where they were looking, where they were going etc... Now there's just ambiguous fuzzy blobs which is pretty much no use at all!!

Plus the levels themselves (I've only done the first few) don't seem to be particularly condusive to sneaking.
An example for that is getting into the rebel safehouse thingy near the beginning of the game..
In previous games there were routes you could take that combined with paying attention to guards and using corners, boxes, lockers etc would get you to the objective with no alerts, but with the safehouse you have to cross open ground with a full on firefight going on directly in front of the door. It just doesn't feel as neat and clean as the other games.

The reviews are great, the previous games are great, I've spent my money on it and really want to like it. What am I doing wrong?!?! Sorely tempted to trade it in towards FF XIII.....

No, you don't want to like it, liking it means you have to keep it and that means you have to play it again.

My advice, assuming you still have a PS2, would be to play 3 instead, it's much better.

In order to sneak effectively, you'll need to use the camo and move really slowly along the floor and walls.

Also pay attention to where the guards are patrolling, then sneak past when they patrol the next area.

I really liked it'd, having never really played any mgs before, i think helped as i wasn't used to all the systems used in previous games

I can assure you there are multiple routes through levels. Perhaps try screwing up a level a few times just to observe how everything fits together; that is how I found out how to do various things.

The game is worth finishing- perhaps because of the ways 4 plays homage to the previous 3 games. The echoes, jokes and interractions are a joy. With that in mind, playing 3 would allow you to get MUCH more out of 4.

MGS4 is one of my favourite games of all time and probably has to duke it out with FF7 and MGS1 for top spot. The ending of 4 alone is enough for you to take a step brack and start praising Kojima.

Good game, good game! /Bruce Forsyth.

Its the only MGS I've completed but don't ask me about the plot as I lost it early on when it went into Snake clones, genomes, etc. It is totally convoluted.

Me and my mate have just ordered two of these in the 2 for £25 deal from Play.

I really enjoyed the demo so I'm really looking forward to this!

I really want to go back to MGS4 as I've yet to complete it, unfortunately though I've become a bit of a trophy whore recently and the lack of trophy support is stopping it going to the top of my 'need to go back to' list

If they brought out a trophy pack I'd be all over it like a rat up a drain pipe :D

Brilliant game though :)

there is a lot of stealth in the game but tbh i started using stealth like an hour into it, at the start i was running around... i'm the same as you, about 8 hours into it now and took a big break, not sure when i'm going back

I know this is going to sound like i'm being an ass, but i'm not lol. My advice TRY HARDER. Seriously, On european extreme if you're spotted, you're dead. I've finished the game several times now, and there are routes through.

In previous games, there were routes through that allows you to avoid enemies. MGS4 is much more about timing and stealth. You have to watch them, see their route and sneak. The reasoning for the camouflage is you now have to try and sneak past enemies rather than around them.

MGS4 is one of my favourite games, And i mean ever. I love it to pieces, Only MGS game I find to be superior is the original on Playstation(Which i prefer to the remake)

I'm with the OP, didn't really get in to MGS4 at all. Played the first 5 levels or so and never went back. The never ending cut scenes annoyed me too much I think.

MGS will always be the best in the series IMO

I've finished it multiple times, including once on the Big Boss Extreme difficulty.

Watch some YouTube videos if you suck at sneaking.. you can pretty much run through the first couple of levels without being spotted :p

You cant beat the original. Its all about playing games on a 21" CRT with a grey controller when I should have been at college.
