Best Intel CPU for £150?

Hi,

I'm looking for a decent Intel CPU for no more than £150.

I currently have the Core 2 Duo E8500 in mind? Is there anything better I can get.

I don't think I need quad core, gaming is all I'll be doing.

The 'i' series are not an option due to my motherboard. Also needs to be Intel, not AMD.

I won't be overclocking.

Thank you!

Well wolfdales go for 65-90 quid in the MM all the time
This, ^,.A second hand E8400/E8500 would be a good choice, i know you say that your not interested in a quad, however some newer games are making use of quad cpu's, a good long term investment perhaps would be a second hand q9550, £120-130.00 or so would be the price to expect to pay for one.

What moterboard will be being used?

This would be my choice (assuming it works in the board) as it has plenty of clockspeed for modern games, and is a quad so you will be able to play all games, even the badly ported ones. Also, these days more games are being made with quad cores in mind.

LOL, I love the spectacular missing the point bit you all do.
As soon as he states a max budget you all abandon everything else he says.
He's happy with dual core as it's only for gaming (and dualies are plenty for that atm).
He's not overclocking so the Q6600 is not an option (why the hell would you buy one if you aren't going to oc?)

Nothing wrong with a stock e8500 at the right price.

Well no....but I just don't understand why it must be new as 775 prices are ridiculous. Hence why I got rid of mine while the prices are up.

As far as s775 cpu's go, your way better off with a second hand chip. New theese days theyre far too expensive, i wouldnt pay any more than 75-80 quid for a q6600, even then it would have to be a proven good clocker (for me anyway, op aint oc'ing), the E8*** duals are a pretty good choice, but if you intend to keep the system a while, a q9550 second hand is a good choice in the long term.

At the moment..more games are going multi core

A quad is the only upgrade path worth taking.

Also I would rather have 2 extra cores than a few MHZ even when running at stock

Agreed, hence my reccomendation of the Q9550, stock speed of 2.83ghz compared to 2.4ghz on the Q6600. And ive had both, both great cpu's tbh.

Agreed second hand is the way to go.

But let's be honest, it's not just a few Mhz is it now? That is disingenuous to say the least.
We are talking nearly half a Ghz for much less money when the extra cores count for not too much.
I won't make the jump to 775 quads as I think we will be another generation on before quad is a neccessity. 775 is a dead socket and 8500 is enough for the 775 gen games.
Wasted money.

Only my twopenneth though.
