Not sure if this should go into Sport Arena...

I need to buy some new hiking socks as my current ones are a bit worn and I'm running out. Just had a quick browse on a few sites and it seems that 1000 mile ultimate socks are a good choice, as they have an inner layer which reduces friction between the foot and the sock (something like that). Although they are expensive at about £11.99 per pair.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

The 1000 mile with built in liner are good for sore feet going the pub after a long walk, but for the walk itself I use bridgedale liner socks with bridgedale heavyweight socks.

As a student needing probably about 3-4pairs, just under £50 for 8 socks doesn't seem very cheap :D

For cheap I'd still advise the bridgedale liner socks (it's against your feet - it's worth it for about £5 a pair - cheaper if on offer) and bundle that with some cheaper ones from a supermarket, get something reasonably padded and foot shaped though.

The liners have the advantage of being almost instant drying too, so if you have a multi day walk you could wash a single pair each night and they'd dry almost anywhere.

I can say double layered socks are a must....but if you do get blisters and you simply have to carry on then get Compeed

The stuff i got was like plasters that you stuck over the blister and moulded to your foot. Still mildly painful but prevented the blister from getting worse.

I don't rate 1000 Mile at all, the build quality is shoddy at best. Buy seperate socks and liner if you can and just make sure you clean them properly. I've had Bridgedale and Thorlos mainly, prefer the Thorlos but that's just personal preference

Never heard of the thousand mile ones.

Personally I steer well clear of Bridgedale, nasty coarse blister inducing things but Wigwam and Smartwool are good bets (although more expensive than Bridgedale, you get what you pay for).

Why do you need 3-4 pairs now BTW? A couple of pairs of good socks will last you a week or so if you don't mind smelly feet so you can always get a couple now and a couple at a later date. :)

Zinc tape is good too, won't come off and will stop it rubbing - no healing effect of course.

Best advice for blisters I ever had was to not get them - it's a choice thing.

If you feel it rubbing stop, take the boot off, and do something about it - swapping socks from one foot to another, even just letting them breathe for a minute.

You can have all the tape and compeed you want but if you don't stop and take the boot off until it's too late they're not going to do much for you.

I usually wear smartwool socks because they're comfortable and I've never had any problems while wearing them :) ...Although that may well have been down to the boots rather than the socks.

If you do feel rubbing occuring another good choice is to stick some tape over it (my favourite is elastoplast, the proper stuff not cheap own brand stuff), it will stop the rubbing and can last for days on your feet without an issue if you are doing long distance.

This.

I have bridgedale liners and then a choice of medium weight or heavyweight socks to wear over the top.
