God I Hate "Verified by Visa"

I have a card from lloyds I can't use online - funny as I only took it out to use online (better protection than debit card) as it asks for my secret phrase to be able to setup 3d-secure.

I've been into the branch twice to reset this 'secret phrase' and both times someone has messed up the data entry and it doesn't recognise it.

Wish they'd just send me a code for it like they do with cards.

The thing is I've used this card/account to order from OCUK in the past so it's not even an unusual purchase or anything suspicious. Even more infuriating is when you phone these people up and they tell you that the system will be reset after ten minutes so the transaction will go through, and half an hour later they are still refusing it.

Because that's the first thing fraudulent buyers do.. reset an account's password.

In summary: remember your password.

I've never had an issue with it, I think the system works quite well - just hope more places use it.

Yep any extra layer of security can only be a good thing surely. Same goes for random spot checks and PINsentry.

I had a OCUk order blocked as a random check. It was soon sorted.

If you have problem remembering loads of passwords, then KeePass is worth considering.

I'm impartial.

I do, however, hate the banks that force you to use a card reader to login. Natwest is much more sensible only asking for it if you want to change something (e.g. pay [random Nigerian] £10,000).

But you are even required to do it when adding a phone number. What's that about? I've just logged in. Look its me!

I find it a pain in the backside to be honest, since I'm not a heavy online purchaser (already provide their card security code), and have to remember yet another blasted password. Also, if you reset your password (perhaps because you keep forgetting it rather than fraud), any previous password you've used is blocked from being used - so you end up inventing a more exotic password, which you are more likely to forget.

Verified by Visa, Securesite and Securecode have the most amateur looking and clumsy intervention I think they could possibly come up with. When I first saw it I thought it was spyware, it looked that badly done. Surely they could have come up with something a bit more professional? Even the gifs/jpgs look like they were generated in 1995.

I've done exactly the same thing on more than one occasion but the reset password has always worked and never had a problem with it.

I've never used verified by visa but I hate securecode. I think it's a great idea in theory but it has been totally useless for me. I signed up when it was still in testing stages then never had to use it for a long time and either forgot or mistyped my password. The system is set up so you can never use the same password twice and since I use it so rarely I can never remember what the password is, so I end up resetting it every time and the whole thing gets bypassed anyway.

can't you opt out of this/

ie as long as you never fill it in there a little box/word fin the bottom to skip.

that's what i do ? or is that another security thing again?

I dislike verified by visa because it's never obvious how to tell if it's genuine. Hi, Mr. Shop on the Internet I've never used before, I'll enter my bank security details into this webpage you've popped up for me!
